Didn't wear mask

Hey all,

Before I freak out here, I read about Silicosis on another post.

I worked all weekend with concrete and sand, in a well, in fact windy areay, but I didn't wear a mask. Should I be concerned, or can I assume that just this once will be no harm?

Any time you work with the dry ingredients you should wear a mask. I wear one from the time I open the bags of dry ingredients until they are completely mixed with water. You can cause damage to your throat and lungs little by little over a period of time. I've been doing this for 20 years now. Get yourself a decent respirator not one of those paper masks, your lungs are worth it. Billie

Yeah, I agree. I mixed about 60 gallons (a full 94 lb bag of cement) with the usual vermiculite, sand and peat. It took several trips to the mixer (which I just baught).

The wind was kind of blowing stuff away, but I did stand over the bags while pouring.

To make matters worse, when cleaning up and bringing the bag of cement inside, a whole about 3 inches in diameter opened up at the bottom and spilled cement all over my garage. After sweeping my throat was a bit raspy.

I just hope I didn't cross out 10 yrs of my lifespan this weekend. I've searched high and low for data on exposure amounts and their relevant risk factors, but found nothing.

I do have one of those cheap masks, but after looking for it for a while, I just had one of those "I'm immortal" states of mind.

I have a mask story to add (not a rant , since none of my loved ones were endangered). A few weeks ago, I ran into an old friend. She lives, and works, in the small village where I grocery shop, and we were both there during designated senior hours. She recognized me, although I was wearing a mask, but she wasn't wearing one. I asked if she had a mask, and she said that she had only one, disposable, which she was saving for the days she had to take her father to his medical appointments. I asked if she'd like me to make her a fabric mask, and she graciously accepted. I dropped it off to her the same day, with some shop towel filters, as I was on my way to drop off my father's groceries. Today, as I was leaving the grocery store, she was arriving--sans mask. I jokingly asked why she wasn't wearing her mask, and she said that she didn't think she needed it unless she was in close quarters with others. When I pointed out that by wearing a mask she was protecting others, she responded that she didn't need it because she's "been good." I'm disappointed that I gave her one of my nice, 600TC Egyptian cotton face masks, and she doesn't wear it. :[ At least she has it if she changes her mind.

It isn't practical to test everyone, all the time to determine who is or is not a carrier on any given day. It's not even practical to test everyone who feels like they had covid 19 and are recovered. It's not cost effective. Just like it is not cost effective to drug test 100K welfare users at a cost of 1M to catch the 1000 who might test positive on any given day, thereby saving 300K. Do the math. To be economical, one parses sparse resources to where you will get the most bang for your buck. Not sure that all these people who feel like they should be an exception to the rule are liberal or conservative. In fact, they are just folks who get off breaking rules in some cases. Don't get me started on folks I know who work in retail and have to argue with people saying their dog is a "support animal" so that they have to bring them into a store. Or any number of safety rules that I have had to enforce that someone argues for because their case is special. No dogs allowed in the park but my dog is special, no collecting of plant material but I just took one small flower, etc. If the rules don't apply to everyone, that isn't fair. And if everyone gets to break the rules, then they serve no purpose. Rules help people survive living together in groups. Stores have safety rules. "Don't climb on the shelves" for example. Does that impede your civil rights? Perfectly reasonable for businesses to employ safety rules to keep their customers and employees safe. Also perfectly reasonable for an employer than to ask that their workers comply with safety rules. I had to handle lots of hazardous materials in science lab and in landscaping. I got in trouble if I didn't follow company safety regulations. I never felt my civil right were being trampled on. See someone get thwapped in the eye once by a branch ricocheting off a tree being cut down, and you'll never again whine about having to wear safety goggles when using a chainsaw, even if said goggles are hot as blazes.

OutsidePlaying I usually wear the disposable masks. I have a partial box in the car in a zip lock bag along with some disposable gloves. We also have a few N95’s and I have some very good fabric masks that fit me well with adjustable ear pieces I ordered from The Sak (yes, the handbag company). They had sent me a free one, and I liked it so much I ordered more and gave a couple to my DD. My face is narrow and my head is small so it is nice to find something that fits my nose bridge well without nearly covering my eyes, even after adjusting the metal band. I always have to adjust the ear pieces by tying another knot but these have an adjustable slide on the ear piece. ~~~~ Hi OutsidePlaying -- I looked up The Sak masks -- and the care instructions say, "Machine wash, gentle cycle, cold water." (!!!) I don't get it. Here I am checking the water temperature for my mask washing -- it's supposed to be HOT -- and they are telling you to wash in cold water! What's the point of that? I've washed my own masks 100 and more times in very hot water and they are still fine.

I would pass on the luncheon because most of the people at the service will probably be there. Why would anyone think one was not safe and the other was fine especially with people projecting their voices if they are seated apart. Second thing but something I have noticed having been a panty hose wearer most of my life. The pictures do not appear to be of the hose part but of the panty part. There are very few even big women's hose that are as wide as is shown. If they were cut lengthwise there is the small problem that the cut edges roll simply because that was the way they were formed.

Well, let's try again. I wrote a long answer, hit Preview Message, and it completely disappeared!!!
Anyway, I hope you'll be OK, since I did worse than you. Started leaf casting last summer, it had no warnings on the bag, so I figured it was safe, until I researched it further (about 2 months later!). Oops. I was outside and tried not to breathe it in, still I'm sure I inhaled some.

Although I'm far from being a doctor, I believe you normally would have to do that for quite some time before it's too dangerous. I'm thinking that because my husband used to work in a dental supply place, some people there developed Silicosis, but they were the ones who worked with the powders for many years and didn't wear the masks they were supposed to. So I'm hoping we both know better now and dodged a bullet! :)

amsoniared, No two lungs are created equal, some people are more susceptible than others. Always wear a mask. The same thing applies when handling your mix. Some peoples skin is more sensitive than others so you should always wear gloves.

It takes years of exposure to develop serious silicosis. You still should be religous about wearing a good comfortable respirator like a 3M 6200 when particulate inhalation is an issue.

From the information I have gathered, it takes a lot more than the exposure I endured that weekend to develop silicosis. I spoke with a fellow from NIOSH and he concurred. Nonetheless, a NIOSH/OSHA approved respirator must always be used. I don't think it is a matter of whether or not your lungs are damaged, but more of how much, and how much damage is required to develop silicosis.

I now feel safe enough to not go through the next few years expecting to have my life cut short :-)

Now to my next goal: Drive slower LOL

Oh no, I meant I am definitely wearing a mask NOW! :)

To add to what you were saying- yes, I also discovered that some people could develop a skin allergy to the stuff,and it can even BURN some sensitive skins, so the skin should always be protected. I wear surgical gloves when I'm doing the leaves.

My leaves turned out beautiful! I have some pics on Webshots but not sure how to post them I would like to show them off!

In California there are warnings on the portland cement bags that it can cause cancer... it states something like in CA it can cause cancer... so I guess if you're not in CA it won't cause cancer...lol.. I developed bacteria growing in my lungs two yrs ago, had pneumonia, in hosp. for 6 days and had the bacteria sucked out of my lungs..was really gross... will never know what caused it to get there in first place. They killed it with antibiotics before a sample was taken... but as a warning to others... I made LOTS of stepping stones, birdbaths and pedastals prior to this happening...without a mask most of the time... It's not worth almost losing your life... WEAR A MASK ALWAYS!!!! Emtnest
