Depends on what you like. The only cowpeas that my wife will eat are Blackeyes,Pink Eye/Purple Hulls and Big Boys. Blackeyes are mild flavored and some folks prefer the stronger flavored brown peas. Blackeyes in all their manifestations ( Most of them are California followed by a number) California #5 is usually the one sold simply as Blackeye. California # 46 is available from some home gardener sources. The Blackeyes remain the number 1 commercial cowpea. Many homegardeners for their own reasons prefer the similar tasting Pinkeye/Purple Hull varieties. Those really into cowpeas will go for more exotic cultivars like Red Ripper, Pennyrile, Brown Crowders, Black Crowders, Lady, White Acre or the Texas Cream peas. Fortunately Blackeyes are readily available as both dried peas and frozen green shellies so you can test your taste buds before you plant. Be warned tho, the frozen green shellies as not as good as homegrown garden fresh. The Purple Knuckle Hull, a brown crowder that I like,but that my wife will not eat on a bet.

I have hawortia that may be H. Reinwardii - but am not sure if coarctata or reinwardtii - they are very similar, in shape and growing habit. Coarctata is supposed to have wider leaves and smaller, more rounded less white tubercles than Reinwardtii. And there are many varieties of both, some smaller - maybe mine is one of these. According to what I read, they both will supposedly grow to about 8" tall. Mine didn't so far, have if for few (maybe 3?) years. The tallest one in pic #1 on left is about 3.5" tall, rest are abt. 3". I bought 1 pot and there were 9 of them, all very similar in size approx. half of what they are now. All the offsets grew in last year or so after plants were separated and potted 2/pot: I grow them quite 'hard' - don't fertilize, and keep them outdoors in spot with sun from early in the morning until about 11:00am or so. They are indoors now, and under some grow lights - the 'weaker' end of fluoro tubes.

regarding your 2 nd question-our vanity in the master bath (part of an addition so it was being built) was custom -part of our agreement with the contractor. It helped a lot when they messed up the framing-and vanity had to become non-standard, narrower and all. If there were no mistakes-I'd still like the vanity, we had a great cabinet maker. But it was "a gift" from the contractor so to say, and since I chose wood that was quite expensive and cabinetmaker loved it too, -it was more expensive gift than the contractor was hoping to give)) Then it was additional headache in terms of sourcing slab, sinks, etc. We did save greatly on them btw-but in money, not in time. Our vanity is really long too. I wonder if we saved on a pre-made one. Other vanities (hall bath, powder room) are small(one is smallish, one is tiny) and we bought them second hand. Hall bath was the only space we didn't gut (sore thumb..but they recently remodeled so seemed wasteful) and to me didn't warrant anything particularly great. So it's a premade thing with some cultured material on top, I'm not sure what material . and we bought it for cheap on Craigslist. It is standard 36 inch as far as I remember. The powder room was carved out of some space and had to have a really tiny something inside, and I managed to find on Craigslist something that was custom made by somebody and the family decided to sell it afterwards. Had to be attached to the wall though so the contractor worked with some ironsmith to work out the solution. Didn't cost us anything-but was an additional work etc. So I guess it depends on a space, The more challenging the room/reno-custom might work better. If sizes are/get to be pretty standard-then obviously you risk much less ordering/buying premade. PS we didn't want electric oitlets in the custom made vanity, I don't even own a hair dryer. So it seemed like something we didn't really need.

I see an issue (dilemma?). I wouldn't plant it out w/o bare-rooting to provide the opportunity to correct the root issues you'll inevitably find. Given that buds are breaking, that should be done immediately, like tomorrow; however, where the tree is now in terms of the spring push means it has lost most of it's cold-hardiness, so freezing temperatures could kill new leaves. Do you have a way to provide protection from freezing temps? Do you know when your "last frost" date is? On one hand, I'd want to give the roots the once-over immediately so I'd be comfortable putting it in the ground, but on the other, I wouldn't do that if it meant the tree was going to face freezing temps. Are there any J-maples in the surrounding landscape now that are pushing the spring flush of new growth? BTW - it won't need watering daily. Al
