HAVE: Dragon Fruit aka Pitaya aka Hylocereus undatus

I got one of these from the grocery store because they look so neat and i just had to try it, it had lots of seeds inside so i decided to try to grow some... anyone else care to try? Below is a list of what i would like in trade, if you don't have anything i want i would be willing to send you some for a SASE.

Generally:

*Notheastern US or SE canada Natives

*Shade edibles

*Shade nitrogen fixers

*uncommon/unusual edibles

*uncommon edible alliums

Especially:

Ramps (Allium tricoccum)

American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius)

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)

Well how was the dragon fruit? Yummy or what? (never tried it, would like to)I have a pommagranate tree with ripe fruit. definately good. Up for a trade? please e-mail me lertok@bellsouth.net

Thanks Baci! I never got the email if you were able to send it? Do you have a link to the Pitaya group you can post? I lost one of the three blooms already but the other two look good so far and will probably flower in the next couple nights? Last time I did not loose them until after they flowered but this time I lost the one before. I am trying to keep it out of the rain while still allowing it to get direct sunlight which involves putting it under the patio cover everytime it starts to rain. Unfortunately this is a difficult task lately with it raining 6-10 hours of every day here! Thanks again!

My fist San Pedro came from cuttings sending by a nice GW member in SF, for free, cuttings and postage. Amazing. They are still in the pots and very healthly. The second plant, 5.5 feets "neglected" plant we bought from a small nursery we accindently saw in the way back home, very cheap. You two are right, I saw San Pedro cactus for sale at HD, Lowes and also Walmart, here in high desert, Southern CA. Happy gardening.

That looks like Deamia (Selenicereus) testudo - same sort of tropical vining cactus but doesn't produce (IMO) as desirable a fruit. I don't know the specific problems you're having, but they're usually traced back to undesirable soil - as long as what you've repotted it in is porous, and the plant remains solid, I wouldn't worry about it. Some corking, particularly on the base on older plants, is normal and should be expected.

Susana, The cuttings seem to root real easy. Looking at my recent cuttings, the one simply stuck in the ground next to a stake in very full intense sun has already sent up new growth while two other cuttings from the same plant located in a pot and a bright but shadey area show no signs of growth. Just dig a small hole and place them in and support them with a stake of some sort. check out them scented geraniums in the background. Its amazing too see them thriving in this heat when I couldnt even keep them alive in the recent past

Hi! I would love to have some dragon fruit seed.

The only halfway unusual edible I have to offer is Rat-Tail Radish--it's a radish that doesn't form a root but puts its energy into blooms; the seedpods are used in stirfries for a radish flavor.

I'm not really interested in Rat-Tail Radish seeds, but i'd be happy to send you a packet of seeds for a SASE... just send me a message if you would like some.
