When to call it quits. Aphids

I have not given up on the crop this year just yet but I have been fighting Aphids all year long. In the beginning of the year it seemed that the neem oil did the trick for pretty much everything. Now in the summer months its not so effective. I Thought I was controlling the aphids with the neem oil here recently and before I could look back they took over my squash and cukes and even peppers. I know there is a root cause but at this stage I want to eliminate the ants that keep them around. I tried organicide , which stinks bad, and it did not seem to do much but smelled to bad to keep using it.I also tried the oil,garlic,soap which works but has to be rinsed off the plants and will stun them for a good while. I just bought a new bottle of neem oil so going to get that going. My main problem now is ants . They keep the aphids going strong I am going to try dematious earth and maybe some ant sticky traps.

OK back to my question. How can you tell if the plants have been ruined by the aphids . I believe they carry diseases?

Yes, aphids (along with other sucking insects) can transmit viral diseases such as Mosaic virus, but if you can't tell whether the plants are 'ruined' then my guess would be they're not!

Why give up on them until you see signs of disease?

Just keep going with the aphid control. As far as the ants go, they may utilise the honeydew the aphids produce, but they don't go out and find new aphids and carry them into your garden, so if it was me I would focus on the aphids, not the ants.

If I had serious aphid problems I would also start thinking for next year about why the aphid infestation is so bad. Doesn't help you now, but could make gardening next year a whole lot more relaxing if you could change conditions so things don't get so bad again.

I'd escalate to Sevin right away. Neem Oil is more of a preventative in their early stages. Once they really establish colonies you need to hit them hard. I am dealing with even tougher Psyllids and they just laugh at Sevin. I've hit them with a very dilute solution of Permethrin, but I won't eat the fruit with the overspray. At least, some of my plants not sprayed with Permethrin should survive producing tomatoes. Next Season, I plan to get a jump on them very early in the Season.

I'm a propagater/experimenter, too. In fact, I always check out the clearance rack this time of year with the intention of buying something just to take cuttings, or for their seed. Last year I bought a huge, over grown Alabama Sunset coleus for a $1.00 at Lowes. Actually it was more of a spindly, bush. I took over a dozen cuttings and rooted them over the winter. The following spring I planted 6 and gave the rest away. Right now, I'm checking out everything in my garden in terms of propagation. It's been a very hard summer around here, and its taken its toll, but I've got my rooting hormone, clippers, and a prepared bed awaiting some cuttings. Heather, the way I look at it is that you have nothing to lose, and everything to gain when you take cuttings to propagate. Plus, it's fun! :-) Good luck! Marilyn

Thanks everyone for your insights. Over the last 29 years, between DH & I, we've had 10 Fords. Every one has lasted 10+ years and the lowest mileage one we had when traded was 135,000. I think this 2002 Taurus is just a "dud" but I've had 3 other Taurus' since 1986 & had excellent records. I had a 1989 Ford Explorer that ran over 200K miles & 13 years. I sold it for $2,000 when I bought the current Taurus and some college kid is probably still delivering pizzas in it! And the love of my life was my 1983 red Thunderbird - DH and I traded it back and forth for 13 years, until our 2nd son was born and the back seat was way too small for 2 car seats. My mechanic gave me a good insight on the "gas guzzler" Crown Vic when I discussed with him what he would buy if he were looking for a used car and had less than $10K to spend. He said he'd go for a full size sedan becuase they still get around 20 mpg, and cost around &8 to $10K. If I kept the car for 6 years, and gas even went back to $4 a gallon, I'd still spend way less total than buying a small car for $14K or more. Plus with 3 unusually tall boys, a small car just won't fit us. He said his top pic for a used sedan would be a Nissan Maxima but it's just not big enough for us. I am very hard on cars - I only live 3 miles from work and most days drive 10 miles or less of 'stop at every corner' type driving. That's really hard on a car, so if my Fords have lasted 135,000 or miles or more, it's like double that in highway miles. I will most likely buy another Ford, mostly because of my good experience up to now, and also because Ford is in better financial condition and will be around to honor any warranty. I know intellectually that I should get rid of this car before it blows, but emotionally I'm just not sure I am ready to spend the $$ on a "new" car. Every time I say I'm going to look at cars, I come up with an excuse not to. I just took 2 weeks off work and had several days with no plans, but never managed to make it to look at cars. I live right in the city & near a major business corridor with 5 or 6 dealerships in a 5 mile stretch, but still can't seem to make it over there!

In some ways you and I have had similar problems. I am not religious. Perhaps you are putting too much reliance on your religious leanings to show you how to solve your problems ? Just a thought. Anyway..my home life has improved a lot, because we moved out of the destructive home life we were heading for. We bought a vastly smaller house, in the city, with a tiny couryard. In doing the move, we have reduced our financial outgoings, there is less housework, gardening etc. The are cafes, art galleries, parks, people, communities, just out the door. We walk everywhere. We do things together we enjoy ! I guess I am saying - sometimes if you change your circumstances things can be so different, and new challenges present themselve. In doing that, your focus on the difficulties that you are experiencing now, fade into the background. Or you can see things from a different perspective. I realized that my DH was never going to be a person who "did things around the house" and I became resentful, that I was doing it all. Perhaps some lateral thinking on your part might help you. You don't want to plod on in your life and become bitter and resentful. Sure you can see better ways for your DH to relate to your children, but don't become a "policeman" who picks faults in his fathering. I could see glaring faults in the way my DH related to our children, over the years, but I guess they have grown up now, and we often sit and talk about what went wrong when they were younger. He knows he did things wrongly and has made ammends. Perhaps your DH might relfect on that one day. Tracystoke says your problem is not a serious one. Perhaps a better way to look at it - is that the problem is "fixable", it has the potential to be "fixed". I will stop rambling now. Good luck with it all.

Counseling can show its effects a LOT sooner than you might think. Especially if you just focus on you two as a couple, not as a whole family. If you two seek some counseling to strengthen your marriage, he may quickly become more supportive and empathetic. For many people, all it takes it having the outcomes of their behaviors explained to them and an "action plan" to behave better laid out for them... He says he's willing to do anything to make it work, so I'd say that's your potential solution right there! And maybe if the SKs see the threat of a breakup as real, they'll smarten up a bit and treat you with more respect. Would they go to family counseling with you and DH asked them to? There's no harm in asking if they're already a bunch of jerks to you both and you're about to split! As for your two major problems... 1) I think he has a point - when you marry someone with kids, you marry a family. But he does need to understand how you feel and try to help you with it, so you also have a point. Please try counseling! It might help sooner that you think. 2) I think his plan of a second family home where everyone is equal might be a potential solution to the dynamics... I'm not a big supporter of this as Plan A, because I think the kids should treat you and DH with respect no matter what home you're all in, but it could be worth a shot now that you're at Plan B (or maybe Plan J or Q??). Get a family home, let the kids choose their own paint colours and decor for their own spaces. I know these kids have issues with even simple rules about human decency, but ask them to help you and DH make the rules for the house that EVERYONE will follow, set the consequences for rule-breaking as a group too. They may be less angry in a space they feel is their own (I know I was a happier late-teen once my dad finished building the walls for my bedroom and I didn't have to camp on the couch in my SM's living room and keep all my belongings in my car anymore). Would you be willing to try the family home + counseling for six months to see if the outlook is brighter?

Sevin will just bring in more problems. It will kill any beneficials you have. That is why Raybo still and will always have problems if the chemical use continues. The problem is that your plants are not healthy enough to ward off these evil creatures. Most pests attack sickly plants before they would a healthy plant. What are you using for fertilizer? What have you done to your soil to get it ready for your plants? Does your soil drain well and does it hold moisture? I know that last question will sound stupid to some but healthy soil will both drain excess water and hold moisture. Lots of organic material will accomplish this. DE will help control the ants. Apply it liberally to the soil surface and reapply after rain but don't look for instant results as it takes a few days to wear their joints. Greenlight brand 70% neem oil kills aphids in a few minutes if not instantly. It smothers the ones directly sprayed. Spray in the evening for the best results and make sure to get the undersides of the leaves. If the ant nest is a few feet away from your garden you can use something more potent but if the nest is in your garden then using something stronger will also kill any pest predators and possibly contaminate your veggies.

The problem is that the ants protect the aphids against predators. I had success using neem but I did NOT spray it on the plants. I sprayed the ground under the plants. Ants avoid neem oil so they were unable to cross it to climb the plant stems and "farm" the aphids. Natural predators were then free to take care of the aphids without ants driving them off.

I haven't seen an aphid all year - knock on wood.

I have lots of stuff flowering - kale, oregano, bee balm, sweet peas, etc. I wonder if this drew in a lot of beneficial?
