Starting to call it quits for the season

As the plants in my garden are finally starting to fade, so am I. I've done so much work to my gardens this last Spring and Summer that I'm physically exhausted and ready for winter.

The last two "To-Do's" on my list before the snow falls is to finish the brick pathway in my rose garden. My hubby promises we will finish that next weekend! I also have a small retaining wall to make out of some free limestone bricks I got from a neighbor. I'm doubtful I will get that done, but I'm going to try.

This Fall I'm also trying out my hand an propagation. I've taken some clippings from my boxwoods to make more bushes for the back yard. I've read tons on propagating but am still not sure what I'm doing. This will be an interesting experiment. Hopefully I'll have four new plants to introduce to the garden come Spring.

Well, with all the planting projects finished and the paving projects almost finished I'm calling it quits on GardenWeb until next Spring. Y'all have a great winter!!

Heather, I'm glad you mentioned propagation. I'm moving this week and tried to dig a small piece of our burning bush to take. Forget it!!! But I should see what I can find out about propagating it! Have no idea what I'm doing either. Good luck to both of us on that score!

Gosh, don't everyone leave!!

Winter is a good time to discuss our plans, dream of new gardens and to share our summer photos at the dreariest part of the year - WINTER!!

I know that some people do not pamper their plants because they say that too much water tends to dilute the flavor of the Tom's - and they are probobly right. As they describe things this makes sense. However, in the past I had BER problems too, but I seem to have solved it by watering consistently. I don't reduce the water as the tom's begin to develop because since I have begun to water on a regular schedule (every other day) my BER problem went away. I agree with everyone here, don't yank out the plants. It is too late in the season for that. For most tom's it takes 60 - 90 days to get any fruit anyway. I don't know where you are, but unless you are in SoCal (where the growing season can extend to the end of October) there just is not enough time to start new plants. I would use this time to experiment with the existing plants and try to find a solution that will work for future seasons. Nothing is more heatbreaking than to have the same problem year after year. Tweak the watering, try using one tablespoon of epsom salt in a gallon of water every couple of weeks (ES promotes plants putting on flowers and chlorophil production), etc. Use the existing plants to help find a solution to the problem so future seasons will be satisfyingly productive. Thanks everyone for your insights. Over the last 29 years, between DH & I, we've had 10 Fords. Every one has lasted 10+ years and the lowest mileage one we had when traded was 135,000. I think this 2002 Taurus is just a "dud" but I've had 3 other Taurus' since 1986 & had excellent records. I had a 1989 Ford Explorer that ran over 200K miles & 13 years. I sold it for $2,000 when I bought the current Taurus and some college kid is probably still delivering pizzas in it! And the love of my life was my 1983 red Thunderbird - DH and I traded it back and forth for 13 years, until our 2nd son was born and the back seat was way too small for 2 car seats. My mechanic gave me a good insight on the "gas guzzler" Crown Vic when I discussed with him what he would buy if he were looking for a used car and had less than $10K to spend. He said he'd go for a full size sedan becuase they still get around 20 mpg, and cost around &8 to $10K. If I kept the car for 6 years, and gas even went back to $4 a gallon, I'd still spend way less total than buying a small car for $14K or more. Plus with 3 unusually tall boys, a small car just won't fit us. He said his top pic for a used sedan would be a Nissan Maxima but it's just not big enough for us. I am very hard on cars - I only live 3 miles from work and most days drive 10 miles or less of 'stop at every corner' type driving. That's really hard on a car, so if my Fords have lasted 135,000 or miles or more, it's like double that in highway miles. I will most likely buy another Ford, mostly because of my good experience up to now, and also because Ford is in better financial condition and will be around to honor any warranty. I know intellectually that I should get rid of this car before it blows, but emotionally I'm just not sure I am ready to spend the $$ on a "new" car. Every time I say I'm going to look at cars, I come up with an excuse not to. I just took 2 weeks off work and had several days with no plans, but never managed to make it to look at cars. I live right in the city & near a major business corridor with 5 or 6 dealerships in a 5 mile stretch, but still can't seem to make it over there!

In some ways you and I have had similar problems. I am not religious. Perhaps you are putting too much reliance on your religious leanings to show you how to solve your problems ? Just a thought. Anyway..my home life has improved a lot, because we moved out of the destructive home life we were heading for. We bought a vastly smaller house, in the city, with a tiny couryard. In doing the move, we have reduced our financial outgoings, there is less housework, gardening etc. The are cafes, art galleries, parks, people, communities, just out the door. We walk everywhere. We do things together we enjoy ! I guess I am saying - sometimes if you change your circumstances things can be so different, and new challenges present themselve. In doing that, your focus on the difficulties that you are experiencing now, fade into the background. Or you can see things from a different perspective. I realized that my DH was never going to be a person who "did things around the house" and I became resentful, that I was doing it all. Perhaps some lateral thinking on your part might help you. You don't want to plod on in your life and become bitter and resentful. Sure you can see better ways for your DH to relate to your children, but don't become a "policeman" who picks faults in his fathering. I could see glaring faults in the way my DH related to our children, over the years, but I guess they have grown up now, and we often sit and talk about what went wrong when they were younger. He knows he did things wrongly and has made ammends. Perhaps your DH might relfect on that one day. Tracystoke says your problem is not a serious one. Perhaps a better way to look at it - is that the problem is "fixable", it has the potential to be "fixed". I will stop rambling now. Good luck with it all.

LL, I would not worry too much about making the bath dark in an effort to make it work for you and your DH. In our bath, my DH enjoys it so much, it has a luxurious feel to him as well as to me. He thinks it is absolutely PERFECT. As hide bound as some men are, they all have a softer side that needs a spot to retreat to for expression. I'm sure he can live happily with your bathroom, or your style anyway, since he more than likely adores you. What man wouldn't, I'd like to know. And my clawfoot tub is the centerpiece of the bath, with a handheld shower set. The real shower is in the other bath. Krayer is right about the really high heat in a greenhouse, depending on the exposure it has to the sun in every season. Our Teahouse has only the east side out of Lexan, and it is insulated everywhere else, but it keeps our portable heat pump going on cool this summer. And I keep it up around 82 degrees. The portable heat pumps are coming down in price quickly, and they are very popular now. I think ours puts out 12,000BTUs on heat, hope it cools that much in the summer too. We are what they call a "high humidity" area, and oh yeah, the condensation pipe drips a LOT outside, DH installed a drain, and I put a big saucer under it to collect the water for the wild birds. I won't worry about the humidity in the winter, when all the container plants come indoors. The bananas and big tropicals will love it in there, after all these years of being nearly wiped out by the cold. I cannot wait to use it this winter, the first test run in cold weather.

Another propagator here. I use the raised beds in my potager to start my cuttings. They have soaker hoses and are on automatic watering so the cuttings don't dry out the first few weeks when they really need the moisture. I sometimes use a rooting hormone but usually find I don't need it for soft wood cuttings.

Right now I have several types of salvias, penstemons and roses doing well in one bed. I just took cuttings of several clematis for another bed which I think I'll try making a hoop house for to protect them this winter. We get into the teens quite often come Dec.

Heather, I hope you drop in now and then. As homemaker says, winter is a time for sharing plans and dreams. Good luck with your cuttings and your garden projects.

I'm a propagater/experimenter, too. In fact, I always check out the clearance rack this time of year with the intention of buying something just to take cuttings, or for their seed.

Last year I bought a huge, over grown Alabama Sunset coleus for a $1.00 at Lowes. Actually it was more of a spindly, bush. I took over a dozen cuttings and rooted them over the winter. The following spring I planted 6 and gave the rest away.

Right now, I'm checking out everything in my garden in terms of propagation. It's been a very hard summer around here, and its taken its toll, but I've got my rooting hormone, clippers, and a prepared bed awaiting some cuttings.

Heather, the way I look at it is that you have nothing to lose, and everything to gain when you take cuttings to propagate. Plus, it's fun! :-)

Thanks all!
I might still poke my head in now and then, but when winter rolls around I'm so busy with indoor projects that gardening is the farthest thing from my mind.
By the time February rolls around, though, I'm ready to start getting out in the garden again.

I'll let you all know how the propagation of my boxwoods go. I'm slightly doubtful it's going work, but I might be surprised.

Tomorrow my husband and I work on the brick pathway . . . again. Since it's our anniversary I've told him that if there was one thing he could give me that would make me very happy it was the completion of this project. I've waited a year to get it finished.

Should we complete it, I will post pictures.
