Re post from the onion forum, Will Onions grow in winter?

Could I plant some onions in the fall and they would grow over the winter here in Michigan zone 5b about 30-40 miles from lake Mi? Would they grow, could I harvest them in the spring, what do people me when they say overwintering them? We do get snow, and it does get to about 10 degrees or below so i'm thinking they wouldn't grow but if they were covered with straw, leaves, and a tarp like thing, could they?

i'm asking cause i about some onion sets this spring but i didn't have the room to plant them and i dont want them to go to waist, right now they are sitting in the basement so they don't spoil, if they wont grow from planting them in the fall i might just keep them in the basement till spring, i hope to have more room next year to plant! *fingers crossed*

I have no idea. I grow winter onions, bu I am in an area where the ground does not freeze. They are also grown in the Pacific northwest zone 8. The key is "ground does not freeze". I looked at Michigan States Onion growing blog and it does not mention overwintering. You should contact your extension agent or Michigan State.

They grow in my zone especially if heavily mulched. But then my ground doesn't freeze like yours does. My best guess for you is no they won't.

I have one row of Egyptian onions in my garden. The row has been there for 5 years. I don't want them walking, so I take all the bulb-lets off in the fall and store them in my basement. Two week ago I potted the clusters up into 5 inch pots, covering with 2 inches of pro-mix. The bulb-lets had already started to sprout about 1/2 inch. They are outside now in zone 5. They will be about 6 inches tall when I take them to the Farmer's Market May 1st. Many of them have 6-8 bulb on each. I don't separate them. Wish I knew how to post a picture. Please don't try to explain how, I'll never get it.

Topsets, walking onions, Eygptian onions, winter onions, there are a lot of names and a lot of varieties. Keep an eye on the heirloomonions.com website for as much variety available as one normally sees anywhere. They are frequently out of stock, though; so some patience is advised. Most common sources are local trades with other gardeners. It pays to ask around locally to see if some one of your neighbors can spare you a few bulbils or a small clump in the spring. They transplant real easy. These are generally hardy as a stone. They go dormant towards the end of summer and resprout from multiplying clumps in the autumn and then tend to be more or less evergreen through the winter even where the ground freezes solid and deep, like here in Minneapolis, hence the common name winter onions. They multiply into clusters of connected small bulbs, with clusters of bulbils on top of the stems. The more established the cluster the bigger the bulbils, which in some of them can eventually almost get to the size of ping pong balls, if the bed is left in place for some years. Different varieties have different eating qualities, although most bulbs tend to be strong flavored and often bitter, something the stems are not in early spring, and the bulbils generally are not either. This varies with the variety. The "whites" tend to be milder and sweeter all around, while the reds and the purples tend to be stronger flavored. I grow spring onions from the smaller bulbils fall planted, and keep a permanent bed to produce the larger ones for soups and cooking. My current variety are reds, but I am thinking of trying some whites. I like to eat produce raw in the garden as I work it, and the reds are a touch stout at times.

OK I have a couple dumb questions I guess. I have one coral honeysuckle growing on a small wooden trellis and yard light. By the way your plants are gorgeous. It appears that you do not use supports. I have taken some cuttings and they are doing pretty well. So do you suggest staking or a support or do you just do some pruning to keep them from being ragged and mine is now. Do you suggest full sun if possible.

Bon, In a recent issue of Texas Gardener magazine, there was an article about Dixondale Farms and it said that DF grows onion plants for Bonnie Plants to sell. So, when a person buys Bonnie Plants'-labeled onions in a store, they may be buying onions raised at DF. (The article didn't say whether or not DF was the exclusive supplier for BP.) When I see BP plants in the big box stores, they often aren't labeled as far as variety goes, but whatever varieties they are, I am sure they'll grow well here if they are from DF. My only real complaint about the onions you buy at big box stores is that they often sit outdoors in the garden centers for weeks and weeks and can be incredibly dry by the time you buy them. So, if buying onion plants locally, it is best to buy them as soon as they arrive at the stores while they still are relatively fresh and green. You can hold them at home in a cool spot (I heel them in using either lava sand or plain sand in a shallow container) like down in the tornado shelter, and have held them that way before for at least 3 weeks before planting them. Growing onions from seed is not at all hard. It is just that they need to be started at a time when I am working on all the other projects that I tend to put off and ignore during the regular garden season, and I'm just not ready to start new gardening projects when I am catching up on all that stuff. Two years ago I grew Keepsake from Territorial, marketed as a winter onion. It grew in a tray starting in late August, then in a hoop house starting in October and produced nice-sized onions in late May. It was an unqualified success and I tried to get a large packet. Alas, they had discontinued it. Here in SE Michigan the climate is very similar to the OP's. I do not know if it would have survived without cover, and the ground did freeze under the hoop house, but they were certainly a lot hardier than regular onions.

When the experts (farmerdill & Dave) have spoken : Thanks gentlemen.

I am in PNW and have started a batch from seeds already. But I am aiming at bunching , not bulbs, Because, growing onion bulbs is just over my head. I have to figure out short day, intermediate day, long day ... and on top of that where the heck to get seeds from and, when to plant.... So all I am interested in is bunching onions. I tried once when I was in GA. They overwintered ok but did not bulb well, BECAUSE IT WAS THE WRONG SEED. I have come to realize that growing onions is more difficult than one might think. I also tried from set, from seedlings, ... nothing good to write home about.

Regardless if they will survive the frozen ground, your onion sets are probably not "overwintering onions" which are specific onions bred to tolerate some cold and then bulb in late spring. If regular long day onions are wintered over, most will just bolt, rather than bulb.

Most likely, if you plant those sets this fall, you might have some nice green onions to eat before they freeze.

if i planted them this week, i could get some green onions before the freeze? thanks Dave, and farmerdill, your answers were much more clear than the one i got in the onion forum, at least to me.

If you plant them an inch or so apart, you should get some good sized green onions (scallions). Assuming the sets are still solid and not mushy.

thanks mark for the answers. will i have to do anything other than put then put the ground this was going to be my 1st go at onions. or do i have to hill the dirt up around them?

I think just plant them about an inch or two deep or so and hope for the best.
