Sugar Snap Peas Problem!

My sugar snap peas are looking like they are dying. I don't know what's wrong with them. They look and feel like they're drying from bottom up. I water the garden every other day. The rest of the garden, pole beans, bush beans, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, green peppers, and broccoli is doing wonderful. I assume the high 90's, low 100's is the culprit. I'm just lost as to what's wrong with these. We tried doing plant food, with no help. This is my first year gardening so anything can be helpful! This is a raised bed garden in IA.

WAYYY too hot for sugar snaps. I'm even surprised they lasted this long in your area. I had to pull mine out a week ago and I live in central Canada. Some plants like peas and spinach just have no tolerance for heat, no matter how much you water them or shade them.

IF you wait a few weeks you can plant something else in their place for a fall crop.

I agree with Slimy. My peas all slowly die as the weather heats up.

Yes, they're pretty easy to tell apart. The sugar snap peas have fleshy, watery, rather translucent pods, the shelling peas have thin, stiff, opaque pods. As soon as you've seen a few side by side, you'll see the differences. Sue

I can't answer your question but it caused me to think of another one. Assuming the window boxes will work, why not elevate the boxes off the ground in some way and let the pea vines hang? You wouldn't need any trellis. I have a window box under the window sill of my garden shed. Maybe I'll try that. Jim

Sorry about the rot; hope it didn't destroy too many of your good seeds. I have had no luck with those pop-uppers myself and at one time wasted many a good bean seed on them. They suffered the same fate as your peas. Germinating peas on wet paper towels is a good tried-and-true method. Hope in a few months you'll have lots of delicious ppods.

Plant peas again as a fall crop, if you want. They aren't bred to produce all year.

I planted my fall crop the other day and I dug down to see if they were sprouting...yes it was.

I'm surprised they even grew that much this time of year. Way too late for them.

Mine died after our massive heat wave in mid June! Amazing you got them this far!!

Mine are about a foot tall now, and are starting to trellis. Plant your peas again mid August maybe, or a bit earlier for a fall harvest. I started mine just a week or two ago because I was waiting for a trellis, and I finally got one, then I waited until I set it up.

Ben, these are usually planted long before you thing anything should be planted. Or later....in the fall.
