Summer Squash and zucchini as fall crop?

I'm wondering if anyone in the deep south can give me tips for summer squash or zucchini as fall crops. The planting calendars I use (for Harris County) don't give a planting date for these in the fall. Is this because they aren't recommended as fall crops? Does anyone have recommendations for varieties that do well in the fall here? Our average first frost is Dec 1, so I imagine I should plant sometime in early-mid August, but it's awfully hot and humid in August here...

Just wondering if others have had luck with squash in the fall.
