Newbie needs help - Apple tree problem

Hi, we planted this apple tree last fall, and yesterday I found some damages on the tree trunk. they are close to the roots (1-2 feet), and on the north side of the tree. Could anyone tell me what they are? Any suggestions what I should do? - I'm very new to gardening, but have dreamed of having some fruit trees! Thanks a bunch.

I think your damage is just wear and tear- trees get thrown around pretty boldly sometimes, and branches get broken or torn off, as is your first shot, and scrapes happen, which is what I think happened in the other shot.

I think they'll heal over fine- just scraped elbows or hangnails. It's a "kiss it and make it better" situation.

Thanks so much Mark! Now I feel much better. Was worried about it. Didn't know much about trees when buying this apple from a local nursery. Now I'll come to this forum offen and try to learn everything I can for my tree. A GREAT WEBSITE! Thank you again for you help :-)

You can spray for fire blight, had it real bad on a pear once, took awhile to get rid of it but the tree was great after that. If that was all you had give it time you may have taken care of the problem. If you have fruit set try Melathion for the beatles. I try not to spray after fruit set but sometimes you have no choice

I know nothing about apricot, but regarding the apple: Looks like aphid damage. Have you sprayed insecticide? Also, aphids are always "farmed" by ants -- the aphids drink the sap from young apple leaves, causing them to curl and turn brown. The ants put the aphids there to drink the juices they secrete. So, get rid of all the ants, and the aphids shouldn't be a problem. Is there any other apple tree nearby to pollinate this tree? Most apples are not self-pollinating, so without another apple variety around, this tree would not ever fruit. There is a shortcut though. If you don't have another tree and don't want to wait 6-7 years for another one to begin to flower for cross-pollination, you can graft some more varieties onto your existing tree and they will likely begin to flower within a couple of years. Yeah, both came in pots. I have temporarily buried the trees in the original pots(with the original soil in them) in the ground as I'm not sure if their current location is going to be their permanent location. Should I remove them from the pots? As for watering, its been between every 2-4 days, depending on how hot its been.

From what I gather, the Pink Lady has a chill requirement of around 200-400 hours, and is one of the few apple trees that is self-fruitful. You should get a good crop off of it sometime in September, assuming that your tree has reached maturity. According to the information that I could find online, the fruit develops the best flavor with exposure to sunlight, so there will be a lot of pruning necessary, and it develops the best color with a good chill.
