I second what grass1950 said. I purchased 5 quick connect underground sprinklers a few months back and have been exceptionally happy with them. I would highly recommend that you follow the advice in this review: Amazon Review It works out cheaper to just order the U shaped joints from the quicksnap website: QuickSnap Store - Parts And to buy the recommended K2 smartset sprinklers from HomeDepot. The recommended sprinklers in that review are superior to the default sprinkler that comes with the package as you can easily set both left and right stops without having to remove the sprinkler from the ground. This is really really handy and makes installation a breeze and gives you the flexibility to adjust spray coverage of the sprinklers when renovating sections of your lawn. The other reason I really like this product over the other ones is that it uses off-the-shelf sprinklers so you are not locked into any specific brand of overpriced sprinklers. More importantly, if you are renovating and planting seed on bare soil, these pop-up sprinklers have a much finer spray which does a great job of providing water to the seed without washing them away. Some of the other products have much coarser drops which aren't all that great for watering newly seeded beds. I am actually just in the process of renovating a 3000sq ft section of my backyard and I don't think I would have had remotely decent results without the help of these sprinklers. I still have to manually move the hose about from one sprinkler to the other, but with the aid of a digital timer and the quick-snap hose connectors, it really isn't that big a deal. Here is a picture of my quick-snap sprinkler in action in week 2 of my renovation: PS - Having said all of the above, Oscillating sprinklers (the ones that spray a roughly rectangular pattern) are also excellent sprinklers for growing grass and maintaining lawns. The rectangular spray shape makes it easier to use when watering most lawns. However, if you have a larger lawn where you would need to move the sprinkler a bunch of times, then the quicksnap sprinklers would be a much more attractive option. Do we all have a love/hate relationship with hoses? LOL! What would we do without them, but they really can be a pain. I have both. We invested in multiple 50' heavy rubber hoses years ago and they have been great. We stretch a couple out permanently during the season through shrubs to where we need them so we don't have to continually drag them around. The others we do have to drag around and put back into place when done. The issue I have with these huge hoses is they do take a lot of space when they're coiled up and they are SO heavy. I do like the flexable hoses because they are so light they are just tons easier for hand watering and when I'm done I hide them in my potting bench. They shrivel up to nothing. I mentioned in an earlier post that we don't have the greatest of water pressure which is why I probably haven't had any issues with them bursting or failing. Maybe folks who have great water pressure would be best to turn on the spigot halfway to see how it goes. I do find the spray goes quite far even w/o good pressure.

I use drip tape I purchased at www.dripirrigation.com . Their tech reps are very helpful and patient. It has an emitter every 12 inches. I space the tape 12 inches apart. This is enough to water most everything I grow, although in hot weather, the germination will be sparse or slow between the emitters. Each emitter drips .4 gallons per hour. Shekanahh, I use a similar set-up as the one Larry described. I have found the in my case the pvc pipe to be more effective and cost efficient. I use 1/2" pvc and I buy it in 10 ft lengths. I use the cheapest pipe I can find, because the walls don't have to be really thick or anything super strong. I also invested in an inexpensive pipe cutter, just to save time over a hacksaw. As for hooking it to the water hose, they make a threaded adapter just for that purpose. I have used a few, but for the most part, I use a regular pvc end that fits 1/2" pipe on one end and has 3/4" threads on the other with a quick connect system for the hose. Here are the pieces I use.... As for the rows, I think it depends on your water pressure. I can hook 2-3 rows together, depending on slope and distance from the spigot. I use tees and elbows as needed to connect the rows together. I cap the ends using normal pvc caps. The only parts I have glued together are the ends where I connect the hose, because there is quite a bit of twisting and pulling at that point, but I don't know that it is necessary. I leave the joints unglued so I can store everything for the winter and I leave the caps unglued so I can flush the pipes, if needed. Here are some pics of the garden from '07 where you can kind of see the layout. At the end of the tomato row, there is the piece made specifically for water hoses, sorry I don't have a better pic. I started with a 4 way manifold, then shorter hoses to all the rows, but I didn't have enough pressure for that. Last year, I changed the layout a little because the garden got bigger. So, it has taken some trial and error to get everything adjusted to work the way I wanted it to, but I think it has been worth it. I think last years set-up worked best, so if I ever get things sorted out this year, I think I will keep it the same way. Oh, and here is a pic of the cutter..... Michelle
