Help my bell peppers are yellowing and dying!

Looking for some feedback on what is wrong with my peppers.

The leaves are yellowing and then getting brown and crunchy.

There are peppers growing quite nicely on one plant.

Here is a picture of my problem, it's large so might load slowly on dial up connections.

Hmmmm... just an offhand guess, but I would say some sort of disease.

I do not believe it is a watering or nutrient problem because there is no clear pattern to the dying leaves and I do not believe it's an insect problem for the same reason.

I would recommend removing the damaged leaves immediately and leaving the rest of the plant. Much of the time diseased plants do just fine if the disease pressure is controlled (removing affected leaves).

Perhaps someone else has seen the same thing and knows what the affliction is, but if it were me I would start off by getting the affected leaves away from the plant.

I had this problem with one bell pepper out of 6 and I trimmed all the affected leaves and sprayed a fungicide on it. That was over a month ago now and I've had several fruit from it.

I would also say that watering regularly and putting down a thick mulch around the plants helps greatly with peppers. I have down straw and newspapers.

I agree with what everyone else has said but, keep in mind, most things ripened naturally on the vine taste way better. In my opinion, that's true with bell peppers as well. They're much more flavorful if permitted to change color while still attached to the plant. So, it's quantity vs quality, to some extent. Just something else to consider. Good Luck! Rick

It has also happened to me. One year I had two jalapeÃ±o plants just two feet apart and one refused to thrive. I finally dug it up and found tons of ants underneath. I replanted it a few feet away and it bounced back in short order. Just dig up your plant carefully, examine the roots and soil, then replant it and see what happens...this how we learn what works best in our own gardens(and there are always some casualties).

Green bells are immature. They turn colors when ripe, the color depending on which variety you are growing. Most turn red. Others are just about rainbow colored, ranging from red to yellow to somewhat purple to almost black. It takes time and patience and a careful watch for insects and diseases to get to the colored stage. (I don't know of any that stay green through maturity but there may be some that do.) I'm running my system 15 minutes per day. Since the plants were good and wet when I cut the first one back, I thought I was overwatering! According to other articles on the website yellow bells are suppose to be very hardy and will often grow on just the yearly rainfall?? However, on the other side of the house, with more shade, 2 of three newer plants are doing fine. I finally pulled out the scrawny one and replace it.
