Aglaonema 'Silver King'

I brought this plant home from our senior center. It is overpotted but new leaves keep coming. The bottom leaves keep turning yellow then die. The plant has one stalk with three shoots off of it. I have tried to be a good detective-with bright light and a magnifying glass. I do not see any pests but I do see an occasional shiny drop in the shoots. I have sprayed it with a "potion" of alcohol,Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap and I think some hydrogen peroxide.

I saw a couple of drops this morning and had to cut off a couple of dead leaves. It is in a warm, bright spot. I wonder if my potion is causing the leaf drop. Should I be worried about the drops.

If the bottom leaves are yellowing, it's probably a watering issue. They like to get pretty dry between waterings. It's probably staying too wet if it's overpotted. If the dying leaves are a pale soggy yellow, it's likely too wet. If they are a sort of dusty, yellow-brown, it's likely too dry.

Where specifically do you see the shiny drop? Sometimes they squeeze out some liquid - it's called guttation and is normal, not a sign of pests.

I have seen this shiny stuff on Ags before - is it almost like little crystals? I have seen this most often on Aglaonemas with whitish stems - especially older specimens. I think you would be amazed at how long this plant can go between waterings. I once had an account with one of these in very low light which I didn't even realize was there - once I "discovered" it, it hadn't been watered in at least two months, and I think it was doing even better because of the neglect. I will repeat my disclaimer that this plant was practically in the dark, though.

Amanda, don't you just hate when that happens??? About a month back, HD had a beautiful, 10" pot, of trio Stromanthe..There were 3 left..19.99 The thing is, I placed an online order the wk before, paid 9.99 + s&h...When I got the Stromanthe in the mail, it was a small plant w/semi-damaged leaves and very little color..I could have bought that beauty at HD for 10.00 more. I can kick myself in the........lol A few yrs back Walmart got a shipment of palms for under 10.00 each..again 10" pots..they had 1 European fan which I love..passed it up..got home..in seconds I decided to drive back and buy it..I get there..would u believe someone came in and bought every palm in the store??? I was furious. I bet someone who owned a nursery bought each and sold them for 5 times more..I phoned Walmart 20 times asking when they'd get more palms, but it wasn't meant to be. Then, the most recent philo I want now is Black Cardinal. One nursery had them on Ebay..the thing is you get 3 plants for I think 12.99 plus s&h..7 and change..somehow they say I clicked purchase which I didn't intend to do..there was a fern I wanted though from the same nursery..I have to figure this out cause I don't want to pay extra shipping...don't know how it's done. Anyway, we go to Walmart lastnight and what do I see? A big, 2-2 1/2' Black Cardinal for 7.00..I was shocked..My dh doesn't know I placed the order on Ebay, so I have to phone them tomorrow while he's at work and get the shipping straightened out..LOL..They're not answering the phone or emails.. The point is, if u see a plant you want, buy it, instead of getting home, deciding the last min u have to have it, going back only to find it's gone..sheesh..Toni

What happened to my Silver King Euonymus??

Thanks for responding.... I did a little bit of research on the internet, but had just a few follow up questions: 1. As you can see in the picture, we have two other Euonymus next to the "infected" one. How do I prevent them from getting infested with scale? Are there any sprays to apply to them to prevent scale? 2. Can the scale "jump" or get to the other Euonymus? 3. I usually Wilt-Pruf in the fall. I negelected to last year. Does Wilt-Pruf help prevent the scale? 4. If we decide to pull it out, does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement bush? As you can see in the picture, we have two other Euonymus next to the "infected" one......this bed is to the right of our front door, directly under a large picture window. The only thing it is the Euonynus and the little Christmas tree (cant remember the name of it) next to the steps. Any ideas? I dont think we will pull out the other Euonymus, unless they get infected too. Thanks for the help.

I agree, I'd rather have an AG than a Poinsettia any day. Where do you find most of your plants without a Lowes nearby? I get into a lot of trouble myself. we have three Lowes, a nursery, and two Home Depots (not that HD really ever has anything here that isn't dead or dying...). I water it weekly and only if it is dry. I will try to neglect it more and see if that helps. I won't worry about the drops. thanks!
