My luck just ran out -- 26 degrees right now.

Yikes. I was afraid of this -- my luck at staying above the 28 degree danger point has ended. 26 right now.

Apples are in full bloom. Quince has tight to large buds. Everything else is basically done, there are a few random petals hanging on here and there on some pears, cherries, and peaches. Oh, and blueberries are coming into full bloom.

So, is this game over, or will most things sail through?

Weirdly I hit 28 the early morning before this one and thought that was OK but all J. plums turned black on outside and translucent inside- clearly cooked. I had gotten 24 or maybe 23 when they were in full bloom and that didn't seem to hurt them. In the past I've had J. plums survive colder temps than 28 that were even further along, so go figure.

I think your apples and blueberries will survive but I really don't know about rest. There seems to be more in play here than only low temps.

You'll pull through, but you will have damage. From my yard, my peaches handled 26F pretty well, as well as the pears and apples, but the apricots, sweet cherries didn't. Strawberries will be destroyed. Its so hard to know right now. You'll just have to wait and see.

Michigan has had it rough. I feel bad for a lot of those farmers. Could be a light crop year on most fruits.

You can butcher during cold weather - but you better have some where warm to do it in - you will get mighty cold outside especially if you have alot to do - i was in a heated barn, that is after I killed them (humanely), bled them, dipped them and put them in the feather plucker - this was done all outside.... until heat went out and had to quit and bring the rest home to finish in my kitchen. You will be cleaning with cold water and your butchered hens will have to be in a cold ice water bath - you will be fishing out the hens one at a time and your hands get cold fast. A few threads above I listed a site that I found that has great information on how to butcher a chicken and has step by step directions with great pictures. I am by no means an expert - but I can say from personal experience after butchering 26 chickens outside I thought I would never get warm!!! No question is silly - ask away that is how all of us here on the forum learn - we learn from each other, if I had to do it over again I would do what mxbarbie said and wait until warmer weather Nelda

That was Easter weekend and the freeze stretched from about Northern Missouri to the gulf coast. HPS requested that people watch their peonies and report on any changes that were seen. Some times the plant's growing habits change. There are no records of what effect a freeze of that magatude can have on peonies. I noticed on some of mine that the following year they were shorter. Sometimes changes do not show up for several years. My Fen Dan Bai was sending out new growth every year. It has not sent out any lateral branches since then. Is the change related to the temps. Who would know unless others notice something similar in their plants and can tie the condition to a specific occurance. The occurance does not have to be weather related.

Dave, I think I will be fine now with the extra room I got from moving the herbs and peppers to under the artist lamp and getting rid of the extra Green when ripes and yellows. (Very sad to toss them, but I did) They all have plenty of room under the lights now. I started seeds on the 18th of February, 8 weeks before the last frost date. Which I have always done and believe that is what is recommended. I do dense seeding (well, not real dense, probably 4 seeds to a cell) so as soon as the first true leaves are showing, I transplant them to the dixie cups. That way the roots don't get tangled together as they would if I left them until later. They are tiny, but they always survive. They are tough little plants. I plant them in a cup only half full of potting mix, this allows me to fill in with more mix as they grow and gives them a stronger root system. Here in North Carolina, our springs are generally warm so I will start hardening them off about two weeks before plant out. And they are going into containers, so if it is an unusually cold spring, they can come be moved into the garage during a cold snap. This is how I have always done it since moving to North Carolina and it has worked for me. Oh no, Joann. I'm sorry to hear that. I ended up with a weird complication this morning. One eye started oozing goo. I called the docs office to speak with a nurse and she said I should get checked out, so I did. They suspect it's indeed a cold virus I'm dealing with, however to give it 2-3 more days and if there is still no improvement they will prescribe an antibiotic. I am now using eye drops, Tessalon Pearls for the relentless cough, and an inhaler standing by for when my coughing gets so bad I can't breathe. They also suspect I'm on the cusp of a sinus infection and that's why my eye is oozing - it's trying to get rid of or reduce bacterial infection. Never heard of such a thing but it is extremely annoying and quite unpleasant to look at. It looks like I've been crying for three days straight- but just the one eye - and is very raw and tender.

As a general rule with blueberries below 28 will kill the open flowers and destroy any formed fruit. Flowers that are partially open will be damaged and while they look like they are ok will not form fruit. You are right on the razors edge temp wise so hopefully your thermometer is off a little.

Was that 26 in your orchard or some official recording station? Thursday nite, the official low was 27, a new record for the date. But that was at the airport 10 miles away. Here it was a couple degrees above that, still a freeze, but I'm pretty sure it didn't get below the 28 point.

The 26 was at the official NWS recording station for Oakland County, which is at Oakland Pontiac International Airport in Waterford, about 3 - 5 miles from my house (depending on WHICH end of the airport complex they have the weather equipment, that I don't know).

I actually don't have a good thermometer/weather unit anymore. My last one died. Right now, all I have is a dollar store window thermometer that I think is accurate to about, oh, plus or minus 10 degrees, LOL -- piece of junk, I just bought it for the pretty cardinals printed on the case.
