Picking Female Zucchini Blossoms
Comments (3)Along the same lines, I'm wondering how long it takes for a female blossom to be pollinated before the plant receives that information, and the female blossom is no longer needed. I mean, does the plant know that the female has been pollinated the instant it happens? Is the trigger that stops the abortion of the baby squash, as would happen without pollination, on some kind of timer? Anyone know?...See MoreWhen Are My Limes Ready To Pick???
Comments (37)Oh wow lovely to see you still here Malcolm. Yes the internet can be a very "interesting" place alright. Lots of helpful, knowledgeable and kind people and then the others. I often wonder are those people as belligerent/entitled in real life. If I come across one i just think, well I'm thankful I'm not their poor spouse, sibling, colleague etc. :). Imagine having to deal with that in real life. I also think that some people are probably ok in real life, they just get a bit brave hidden behind a computer. Its a pity it has stopped you posting, but I understand your decision entirely. Hope you are surrounded by beautiful trees, lots of fruit and fragrant blossoms :). Hope you get to share your knowledge with others in person....See MoreAre these pears ripe and ready for picking?
Comments (7)Freedom: I grow Bartlett and Summercrisp pears. My bartletts are best when I pick them just as they turn from dark green to lighter green/yellow skin color. Yours in the photo look ripe enough to pick to me. When picked at this green/ripe stage I can refrigerate them for a month and just take some out every few days to refill our fruit bowl on the table. They ripen up in about 3 days that way. If I want to can them then I leave them in my bushel basket and put some newspapers over the top to trap the ethylene gas all ripe fruits give off. In 2-4 days the entire contents of my bushel are ripe. Just an FYI if you can pears, you want them a bit firmer than for fresh eating as they would be processed in a water bath. Canning pears that are too ripe result in very soft pears (mushy). Leaving them on the tree to ripen too much can result in beautiful fruit that is rotten around the core. I know how you feel. My brother in law and I share the pear crop and he yells at me every year that I am picking the pears too green. I always win that battle when they are just perfect to eat or can up a short time after picking. He picks his later and has to contend with rotten cores....See MoreAre these Artichokes ready to be picked?
Comments (3)The last one looks big enough. I would consider 1 and 2 too small. 3 would be ok but could be bigger. Artichokes don’t ”ripen”. You just have to catch them before the flower develops too much. I’d pick and eat no.4 and see what it’s like....See Moredigdirt2
