HAVE: Birdhouse Gourd, Okra, Pea and Granny's Rose rootings

I have this years bird house gourd seed, Okra seed, Brown Crowder pea seed and cutting from one of the most beautiful old Chestnut Style Rose bushes you have ever seen. The bush is filled with fragrate deep pink blooms and will cover the ground with rose petals. We call this antique rose "Granny's Rose" because it was one of her favorites. I can email a picture if requested by email.

I wish to trade for almost any heirloom garden seeds. I package approx 50 seed in the okra and pea packs and approx 25 seed in the bird house gourd packs.

In order to trade for cuttings of "Granny's Rose" due to high postage I ask for a very good trade. The root cutting is shipped in a box with the root wrapped in wet towells and in a plastic bag. They grow well in zones 6-9. Last year we paid almost $100 in postage shipping Granny's Rose to those that asked.

I would love to try the birdhouse gourd, mine never took off, I had three started, but the weather got too cold here in Michigan, vine died. Take a look at my list, maybe there is something you would like. Thanks, Fayth, michiganmama

Jen, I can send cuttings of the plum. I have not tried to root them and was wondering if you had. I might try to root the Guthrie after it leafs out more. I can also send a bulb of the Eucommis. You can propagate Eucommis by carefully pulling a leaf off and planting the base of it in a small container of good potting soil. The leaf will gradually produce 2 small bulblets by the end of summer. I think Chickasaw Plums require 2 different plants to pollinate before they can fruit. The Indians had hundreds of cultivars, probably lost now. Does Cerinthe major grow easily for you? Mine keep dying. Mexican Petunia, dwarf pink is one I don't have. I'm waiting to see if Mirabilis longiflora comes back. It has smaller but very long stemmed white flowers with a fragrance similar to M.jalapa. I can swap you for a seed or two of Senna didymobotrya. I have Cassia or Senna hebecarpa, similar to C. marylandica. Have Salvia leucantha- Velvet Sage in two varieties. We may get seed of Sinocalycanthus this year. It had a few pods last year. Mike

That's for sure. My mother used to dump it out of a can, into a pan and cook it till it was ruined. As a kid, I liked the taste, but couldn't get beyond the slime of it that way. When I got older, I realized that I liked it spread out with tomatoes and in soups, pickles, then tried frying fresh. and very much like it that way. I love to grow it, not just for the vegetable, but because I find the plant so interesting and almost majestic in the garden. Here in my WV backyard SFG, my neighbors were curious about the tall plant in my garden and it made for a great conversation starter, as well. I didn't get it put out last year due to some time constraints, but this year, I plan on planting about 8, which should do for one person just fine. I plant Spineless Simpson, as it doesn't get so tall that I can't get to the pods without a ladder.

@ cass062528, Most okra plants only bare one or maybe two pods per plant, every other day. I agree with LoneJack Zn 6a, KC, you'll need to plant more okra seeds if you can, or else you will be frustrated by the need to save pods over several day's harvest in order to accumulate enough pods to be useful. when I market garden, I plant my okra 9 inches apart, in a double row, staggering the the seeds, so they do not line up. It looks kind of like a saw tooth, or zig-zag pattern. That planting method yields about 1.8 pounds of okra per linear foot of row space over the course of the season. A 150' foot row bearing about 280 pounds of okra per season. My rows are spaced at least three feet apart, so I can squeeze down the middles to pick okra. In my market garden, I plant my rows five feet apart, so I can get a wheel barrow down the middles. This photo shows me standing between two rows that are five feet apart. This photo was taken early in the season, so the plants haven't filled in yet. By August, the leaves reach out and shake hands across the walkway. At that time, I bring out the corn knife to trim them back away from the walk way.

I would be interested in a root cutting of "Granny's Rose." My husband loves and collects roses and it is his birthday soon so I'd love to surprise him with it. I would be willing to trade several kinds of seeds for it. Or I also have a few plants that I could dig and trade, if we did it quickly so you could get them in the ground soon. Send me an email and we hopefully we can work something out.
