Need some help with my cukes

hello all,

I'm having some issues with my cucumbers this year and I can't put my finger on what the problem is exactly. I had a mildew powder that I quickly fixed but now My plant leaves look yellowish or a light green. Not a crisp green like I believe they are suppose to be. right? Let me give you guys some more details

Hartford County, Connecticut (I have more clay and rocks no sand)

I mixed my soil back in early March with Compost, Cow Manure, peat moss

I just recently fertilized with "NatureÂs Glory Tomato and All Vegetable Fertilizer "

I water when they need it basically about once or twice a week if that depending on my weather. or if I notice they are a little wilted .

I don't have pictures yet I apologize I can get some tomorrow when I'm in the garden.

Curcubits don't stand moisture stress very well. By the time they are wilting, it's already too late. How much damage? Depends on the extent of the stress, but at minimum wilting due to moisture stress will lead to bitter cucumbers. Consistent watering is key, and with your clay soil deep watering is preferable. Add a bit of compost tea or fish emulsion into a bi-weekly, 5 gallon deep watering and you will see a real boost. Steve Solomon calls it "fertigation".

Fertigation is adding water soluble fertilizers through an irrigation system and IMO is an excellent and trouble free way of adding fertilizers to your vegetables.

They sell these systems but I made one from a hose-end sprayer that works fairly well.

I don't use anything Miracle Grow but found that their hose-end sprayer worked for this.

I think its sunburn, I have other cucurbit plants do this also. Its wicked hot right now. As for your cucs not growing past an inch I would assume its a pollination issue. I get baby cukes and squashes all the time that the pollination doesnt seem to take. Cucumber blossoms are so small that hand pollination is hard too. You need bees, wasps or other pollinators to do that work for you. Also all my cucumber plants were trellised vertically and the plants died starting with the lowest leaves and working upward. Neem oil is good for preventing this. I believe its a combination of squash bugs, white powdery mildew and inconsistent watering!

Thanks for the response's sure enough i went back out a little later and it was as if nothing ever happen. They were back to normal. I didn't know heat could do that!! HAPPY GARDENING!! Karl

you might want to double up on the farmers in the veg forum ... how big were they are transplant ... if they were basically this big ... and that is pretty big for transplanting ... then there must be some level of transplant shock ... and such .. severely stressing the leaves .. can cause the leaves to yellow .. if not fail completely ... the old leaves... but new ones can come ... fert does NOT cure stress ... but what you used.. sounds benign as can be ... get a pack of seeds.. and sow a few more ... the hardest lesson for newbs.. is sometimes... to chill ... let nature take its course .. you cant be reacting to every little thing ... observe ... but dont freak out ... i gave up on cukes.. long ago .. they are not the easiest of veg ... so if you fail.. welcome to the club.. lol ... ken

Ahhh, Lesson learned. Yep. Hardening off really should be described as about a TWO week process. I did the same thing myself this year with some of my peppers and I've been growing them for over 12 years...lol Should be fine though. It's up to you on snipping that 1st one. Are you hungry? lol Snipping it will give you a quick bite now or leaving it will give you an early treat. Snipping it will tell the plant to start putting out more foliage and flowers.. always a good thing for a healthy young plant. Me? I'd leave it, but I have a very long season. All depends on whether you're pickling or not. If pickling, snip it. I like to have a lot to pickle at one time -- the older the plants and the more the plants allows that to happen. Kevin
