Drainage Problem for Blueberries in Containers

richardklaas

I've had a high mortality rate with my blueberry bed, so I'm trying to grow this year's replacement plants in containers. I got 24 inch pots, and dug a hole big enough to get most of it in the ground. Unfortunately, the bottom halves of the pots are now buried in some extremely impervious clay. After recent rains, the pots have had up to 10" of standing water, which never really drains completely. Not good for blueberries. I'm not willing to give up, nor am I willing to dig out a French drain.

My main question is, what are my options? I have considered filling in the bottom of the container with gravel, or pine bark; replacing the cheap plastic pots with fabric pots, or just lining the hole with hardware cloth (my objective is to eliminate vole predation and root competition from the neighbor's trees) and getting rid of the pots altogether. I'll also be working on improving pH and irrigation, so maybe that's all I need. Any other ideas?
