I've never planted a tree at that stage. Do you have suggestions about how I would go about working with a new graft?

Dave, all you have to do is be a little more careful not to knock the early growth off, since you could knock off the whole variety by doing that. Its really not so big a deal. Do make sure you have no rabbits about, they could also chew it off. If you want to be extra triple sure it will grow OK, erect a fence around it.

This is my first time with apple bench grafts, ordered from Kuffel Creek Nursery. I planted them all in five gallon pots with potting soil as soon as they arrived, and have been picking off the new sprouts on the rootstock. All ten are sprouting out nicely from above the graft. I have them in mostly sunshine, in an out of the way of traffic place where they wonÂt get knocked about by the dogs, cats, possums, or kids. TheyÂll probably go in the ground this summer, when theyÂre larger. There were three that didn't want to sprout out at first, but are showing green sprouts now, as of this weekend.

Dave, Plant the tree so that the graft union is about 4 inches above the ground. That's important because if the scionwood gets below ground level it can root and you'll wind up with a full sized tree. You must fence around the tree for rabbits and deer. You should also use a metal or plastic hardware cloth to protect against mice and voles. Pick off the leaf shoots that sprout below the graft union too because they sucker away from the new scionwood. If all goes well you should see 2-3 feet of new growth in the first year. You should soak the roots for 12-24 hours before planting. Water it like any other tree you would plant. Good luck!!
