Farm field now my garden. Everything dies!

This is my first time on here, and I need a lil advice. I've gardened for years, and never really had problems. Now this year I've moved to the country with the space for the garden of my dreams. The area was part of a soybean/cornfield for years and years, and is about half an acre. Now that I try to grow vegetables (corn, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, melons, beans) in what WAS a farmfield...well...nothing grows right. It's all green except the corn (which is yellowish), but all stunted. Could all the chemicals used by the farmer in years past have contaminated my garden and stripped it of what it needs to grow regular vegetables? I've replanted and replanted, thinking that the rain just drowned everything, but most of it is well drained. Everything just stares at me...an inch or two tall...and taunts me with "you can't make me grow! Ha Ha!". Please help?
