First Post! advice on doing a fall crop?

So this has been my first year doing a vegetable garden.

30 year old male city dweller.

I put in 8 raised beds and have had okay results.

It's been a learning process to say the least.

I've been rich in lettuce!

Its been really fun though and I look forward to getting it even better next year.

But I've just taken out my turnip. Spinach, peas (a total disaster), lettuces etc and now i have a lot of empty space.

What do i need to do for a fall crop.

Can I put anything in there now? Mid July upstate new york!

or should i wait till august.

What seeds should i purchase now for a fall crop.

I particularly like heirloom varieties.

I have at least two beds sitting unoccupied as of this moment.

Any advice would be awesome.

I'm pretty new to all this so please be gently.

Thanks
