It is true that Chandler is a short day or june bearing strawberry in much of the country. In the coastal regions of California where the winters are warm and the plants do not get enough winter chill, they will act as day neutral or everbearing strawberries. For this reason much of the strawberry production for the country is located along the coastal plains of California. Al

Cristina, I think the last people probably thought they took all the plants with them, and left this one behind. They multiply quickly by runners, so you should have a decent lil patch next year. I have had strawberries for maybe 6 years now..never fert, never give them any attention except water when its been dry. Never cut them down, and never mulch. I leave them for the bunnies so they leave my flowers alone, lol. I agree about pulling the weeds, gotta do that. but be careful because alot of times those darn weeds like to grow right at the base of a plant, and when you go to pull it you may pull the plant, they have shallow roots and will come out easily. I suggest holding the strawberry plant down with one hand and pulling the weed with the other.

I am no expert just trying to remember forty plus years ago when we use to pick strawberries during summer vacation. I think new plants are better fruit producers. After and during fruiting strawberry plants send out runners like crazy and those will be the big producers for next year. I do lasagna composting and I had a nice row of strawberries volunteer along the edge of my lawn. During the summer they sent runners further up into the roses. I didn't beat the bugs to many of the berries but boy were they good. I will leave it all as is because it really is a nice dark green ground cover and I don't have a better idea. If the old bushes don't produce well I bet they will send out runners for the next year that will.
