Hi Newbies,

What part of the country are you in? Do you know your last frost date? If you don't, call your local Cooperative Extension Office (see link below) and ask. Your tomatoes, peppers and basil are all seriously sensitive to frost, as they are tropical plants. Your Big Boys may need warmer temperatures than they're getting. Try to find a place that is 75-80F if you can. Light doesn't matter until they sprout, then they need direct sunlight or fluorescent lights just a couple of inches above them. When you plant your tomatoes, you can plant them deeper than you think. Prune off the lower leaves and more roots will form all along the stem that is underground; more roots = more nutrients absorbed and more resistance to drying out. Once they start growing, prune off the lower leaves gradually until there is a clear area under the plants. Mulch with straw or something to prevent dirt from splashing onto the leaves and carrying disease with it. Both Big Boy and Roma are indeterminate (they keep growing until they die or freeze), I believe, so they will need strong support. Put your support or trellis in place close to the time you plant them so you don't damage the plants putting them in later. Most peppers and basil are free-standing, and don't need support. Few plant questions from newbie

Hello, I had a spider plant that was pretty much dead. After much research I decided to down size the pot, put it in my kitchen window so it would get LOTS of light (no direct) and water it sparingly as I read that they don't like too much water. I too, cut off a lot of brown leaves. Now, it has sprung right back and it is looking amazing! Be patient and it will turn around and look super healthy. So don't you worry. :)

Hey !! WELCOME!!! Sure bring it in.. They don't have to go dormant.. I keep loads in the house.. They usually drop their leaves but still bloom...You may have some tips that die back trim them off but I wouldn't cut one that has a Y back past that.. If you do trim I would leave about 6 leaf nodes on each branch for a healthy start for the next yr.. I also store them in the garage where the temps stay above freezing around 38~40*..
