With a dwarf-root stock (colt), can I graft Wild Black Cherry?

Hi,

I would really like to grow the native Wild Black Cherry (Prunus serotina), as it is a primary host plant to a number of butterflies.

I don't want the tree to grow large (and it can grow into an overbearingly large tree); i'd like to keep it to under 20' tall without pruning, and yet not have it die out due to the rootstock not being able to host it for a long lifespan.

Can I graft a Wild Black Cherry onto dwarfing rootstock (colt/cherry)?

Steve
