Spray program for oriental pears

I hate to do it, but, my fruit has a worm that goes in the end when I pick it in the fall.

So, if I wanted to spray this year for control, what would I use and when?

They haven't budded yet.

rc: Codling moth are very bad in Amarillo. You will have 100% loss in apples if you don't spray. Don't know how bad they are in Asian pears. But I had to spray every 10 days from May until Sept 1 on apples. I used diazinon. That is no avaliable. Sevin does a great job but may cause spider mite outbreak.

I'm not sure the footies will help with codling moth. I've used them here but we have few of that pest. I'm pretty sure the ziploc bags would work.

Not sure either how the organic sprays would work. But you might try BT or spinosad.

PS, I know nothing of the various poisons. I have used dormant oil occasionally in the past on other stuff. That's about it.

Many retail outlets are indicating that it has been discontinued by the manufacturer. We have had several products like Calypso and Tourismo that were discontinued by the manufacturer, yet we were still able to get the product from distributors and the manufacturer was still listing it until all supplies had been exhausted. Check some online listings for Spectracide Triazicide and you will see that many indicate that it has been discontinued. It may also be that Spectracide has discontinued only certain sizes. Because of the whole bee toxicity thing, many products are seeing a major slowdown in retail sales and those products are being discontinued in conjunction with their lack of sales in the retail market.. I know that Bonide has completely changed the chemistry of its Fruit Tree Spray because of the phase out of carbaryl. It used to contain Captan 12%, Malathion 6%, Carbaryl .3% and a spreader sticker. Now it has a new name of Fruit Tree & Plant Guard and contains Lambda-Cyhalothrin .05%, Pyraclostrobin 3.06% and Boscalid 5,622%, yet Bonide still shows their Fruit Tree Spray listed on their web site. They discontinued the Fruit Tree Spray last year. I only know because I went to college with the regional sales rep and he told me last spring that they had discontinues it.

Sujiwan, If you're still here, you do not need different sprayers for different fungicides. In fact, it's common to tank mix both fungicides and insecticides and apply at the same time. As Glenn and Marcus pointed out, it is advisable to have a different sprayer for herbicides. Glenn addressed your pome fruits, but for your plums you'll probably need a fungicide to protect against brown rot. Captan or Montery Fungi Fighter should protect you from brown rot. Captan can also be used on apples, whereas Fungi Fighter is not labeled for pome fruits. In terms of your chickens, generally speaking the pesticides we are discussing are not inordinately lethal to birds. I've sprayed trees that had Robins nests in them, and it didn't seem to affect the birds at all. Hman has mentioned Imidan will cause birds to vacate nests, but I doubt you'll be using that. If you want more information on the avian toxicology of a specific compound, Google the active ingredient of a pesticide with the term "LD 50". For instance Triazicide has gamma cyhalothrin as its active ingredient. Googling shows an LD 50 value of greater than 5000 for quail. Anything over 1000 shouldn't cause problems to your chickens, even if you sprayed them directly with the mix.

Most growers (commercial and home) don't spray plums and peaches much after harvest. Most of the sprays are targeted to protect the fruit. In the past I've always discontinued sprays after harvest. This year I may spray peaches once or twice after harvest to slow down shoot damage of Oriental Fruit moth. Peach leaf curl needs a dormant spray, but beyond that you probably don't need any sprays after harvest.

For most species I prefer moving even 3" caliber trees BR, freeing and moving as much root as possible, but pears are the exception and survive better by moving a heavy ball, in my experience- wrapped tightly with string and burlap. I've lost big Asian and Euro pears, even when carefully saving most of the root system- no matter what you do it seems all hair roots will be killed when moving plants bare root. Other species rapidly regenerate fine roots and reward you for saving lots of big root which is a key advantage of bare root transplanting- the other being getting roots completely set in the soil of the new site immediately but pears are different. In my nursery I now place all pears in in-ground bags from the first planting while other species are sized up and dug up bare root to either sell directly, put in large pots for a season or put in large in-ground bags or just moved to a more open space to sell them later as up to 3.5" caliber bare root trees. I usually install these trees myself so the customer may not even notice- they actually establish quicker than any other trees but people can be frightened by a tree not attached to soil.

Well I guess I'll mention this. I developed a bag last year that seemed to stop everything if you have the time to make them. Here is what I did. 1) I prepared a ziplock like I learned how to do from the instruction of Jellyman and others on this forum. 2)I then stapeled screen door material to the outside of the bag and the installed it onto the fruit. I did this to apple, pear, and citrus. The bags were my best effort to stop the plague of birds in my back yard but as a bonus they seemed to stop just about all form of pests. Oh exept for racoons that did rip off some apples but a little sheet metal wrap around the trunk stops them. Maybe this will help.
