Chires baby corn

I planted chires baby corn this year and it still has no sign of corn on it.

I planted it in early may. I live in Pennsylvania and I'm thinking I'm running out of time. It just looks like overgrown grass!

Is anyone growing it this year?

I bought the seeds from southern exposure seeds.

I grew it last year and have some planted this year. Last year I started the seeds inside on 5/13, planted it in the garden 6/16, had my first harvest 8/22 and my last harvest 9/20. It grew about 3' high and out of 16 plants, I yielded enough for several 4 serving meals plus I froze a couple packages. It requires 2 hands to pick as the stalk is not too thick and can be broken easily when harvesting if you are not careful.

This year I didn't get a chance to start it indoors so I planted it direct in the garden on 6/16, right now it's only 1' high so I'm not optimistic. Though according to my notes, it was slow to grow last year until the heat hit.

Thanks both of you! Great link Linda Lou. This is in preparation for a great recipe for cornbread. I'm a diabetic too and am trying alternative recipes that don't run up my sugar quite as much as old fashioned cornbread. It will probably be a 'make do' recipe that will tide me over with chili or soup and only occasionally have the real (bad!) cornbread. --beth
