Carrot harvest - very tiny roots

georgia_transplant

This is my first year growing carrots. I planted seed of Chantenay red core in 9" raised beds filled with a few different kinds of compost. The tops grew beautifully, healthy, green and tall. They were spaced maybe 4-6" apart. Today was their 80th day in the ground, so I took a peek at the roots.

They were tiny, short (about 1 inch) and skinny. The non-carrot carrot.

I tried to find possible explanations for this online without success. I found answers to about a dozen carrot growing problems, but not this one.

We had the wettest spring in about 100 years here (but it was still considered "normal" rainfall according to the historical record), and the last couple of weeks have been in the mid 90's - 100.

Any recommendations? I would love to be able to feed my family with lots of home-grown vegatables, but so far (this is my second year), my results have been abysmal.

Thanks in advance.
