Squash vine borer eggs

I moved to Louisiana and started a garden with some zucchini and yellow squash in a spot that has never had a garden. I have always been plagued by the SVB in the southeast, but was hoping to be hidden for at least one season. As soon as the plants had a few leaves, I noticed one of the devil spawn flying around my plant. I noticed their small brown eggs on the stems and began plucking them off killing them with much satisfaction. I have one question. How long does it take for them to hatch?

When vines begin to run,apply to bases of plants 4 times at seven day intervals. Pheremone traps for squash vine borer are commercially available. These traps can be used to indicate when moth activity begins. The use of Spintor for looper control will reduce squash vine borer populations. I believe that the eggs hatch 5-7 days depending on daytime temps and humidity

I found a SVB moth flying around my squash today as well. First one I have seen all year. My squash plants were just starting to revive after a long devastating bout with powdery mildew. Now this! When I first saw the moth I thought it was a wasp. After a closer look I realized what it was. Ended up chasing the thing for 10 minutes before I got him. The bad thing is I have no idea how many eggs (or where) it may have laid before I swatted it. I'm not really worried about the squash I currently have since I was thinking about pulling them in the middle of August to make room for some kale. I am worried about next year's planting in that spot. I guess I will not be growing squash or zucchini in that spot next year.

cmonkey :I've thought the same thing too, and remember trying to figure out what they mean by "wild cucurbits". tigrikt - Thanks for posting that article. I love reading those old articles and seeing what people did a long time ago. I had to google "Cymlings" as I had no idea what he was talking about... they are another name for "Pattypan"... interesting. I always wonder what the Native americans did, when they grew pumpkins. I bet they probably had some good tricks they used. Its interesting how the articles names these different pesticides they recommend. Looking them up, they are all banned now for home use for being too toxic. Its a wonder our ancestors didn't all die of cancer and poisoning with all these chemicals they used! I like the idea of an "ovicide". I wonder if we have anything now in modern times would not be very toxic but could do the same thing. Would be a lot easier to just spray the vines than hand pick the eggs.

It is different for each region. The best resource is to check with the local county Agricultural Agent. Also, most universities have an Agricultural Extension website. I did a quick search and here's the Ext. website for the University of Illinois. Click the 'Explore Extension' box in the center of the page and type in Squash Vine Borer. If you can't get exact time frames, then contact your local Ag. Agent.

I've been using Bt and only got one episode of borers so far. They took advantage of a couple days of on and off rain.

I'm glad to report that the surgery and the injection of Bt appears to have worked.
