Actually, I don't think it's a fungus or SVB. Yesterday I picked some nearby lettuce and accidentally picked a seed pod from some clover. Pretty sure the seeds from the clover are the same as I found on my tomato. I'm not sure how they got all the way to the top, but they look like the kinds of seed pods that burst open to throw the seeds everywhere. Or maybe a bird picked it and dropped it. I don't know - think that's what it is, though. Glad my squash aren't threatened - they're just starting to pump out the flowers.

Yes - I too would concur those are SVB eggs. I removed a bunch off my own plants today and although I covered them after that, I was apparently not quicker than the moth which seems to have arrived at least 5 days earlier this season. The eggs can indeed appear ANYWHERE on the plant, and I found them on the stems and undersides of the leaves, and also near the plant's base. I used sticky tape to remove anything I could find, then covered my whole squash "situation" with lightweight remay fabric. I will hand-pollinate throughout July to get past SVB season in CT. I am also going to plant more bush variety zucchini tomorrow to ensure a late harvest. And while I am out in the garden tending and weeding, I will thoroughly enjoy murdering those little friggers.

I'm in North Carolina and usually loose the battle with SVB but I also have plenty of the more obvious squash bugs. I haven't noticed that they do much damage even when there are lots of them around. Re SVB: this year I am trying a row cover. I started with some manual pollination but right now I have been hoping the svb are not around in the middle of the day and have left the cover partly off then. We will see what happens.

Oh no, they lay eggs just about anywhere on the plant. The eggs are small - about the size of a pin head- and reddish brown in color. I have had a terrible time with them on my crooknecks and zucchini. I have picked hundreds of eggs, but the borer prevailed and I lost 2 plants so far. The other 2 have been invaded - I had to cut the stem and pull out the larvae, then bury the stem to root and hopefully save the rest of the plant. It's up in the air as to whether I will get any more fruit. I think next year I will try row covers. Good luck with yours! Let us know what you spray with and how they do!
