need ID for a new bug on my eggplants

Sorry, I don't have a picture...

This bug (I'm told it is a true bug) is about 1/4 inch long and shaped like a fat oval. It's somewhat like scale, if scale were giant -- a clear yellowish disk that adheres to the leaf surface (very thin flat edges). However, it is easily removed from the leaf (don't need to scrape it off). Underneath you can see all the bug's legs pulled in, and I can see two tiny antennae.

The best way to describe its back is as if a tiny black bear was lying on a yellowish oval disk with its arms stretched out to the sides (like a bear rug). Kinda crazy, I know. The black bear section forms a slight hump.

Has anyone ever seen these? Is it benign or harmful? I've gardened in Massachusetts for decades and never seen anything like it. It's only on the eggplant seedlings - don't know if it came from the nursery with it or acquired it in my yard while hardening off.
