Something's killing my corn!!!

Someone please help me, I'm losing it! First my corn seedlings were constantly pestered by crows. I planted 6 rows of corn and when I checked on the seedlings, everyone would be plucked up by roots within days of germination. I bought the plastic owl with limited success, then tried pie pans which had some success. I've replanted now about 4 times and I currently have 6 plants to show for it. Make that 5. I came home today and my largest plant (about 3 feet) was gnawed at the base of the stalk and looked like it had been chewed by something. I searched around and found a 3" diamater hole in between corn rows going down into the ground. This is very hard GA clay so I can't imagine it's a mole. The top half of the stalk had been dragged about 3 feet from where it was originally cut down. Does anyone have an idea about what could be chewing my corn plants and more importantly, what I can do about it?
