tomatoes ready?

Here's a pic of some small guys off my better bush.

They were red and soft but small.

are they ready? Or should I have left them on?

They won't grow any larger when they're that red.

No sun for us until Wednesday. I haven't even started my tomatos, I'll have to get plants. I did see what looks like lettuce starting in the big pot of mixed greens I seeded last year, I hope that these are reseeded. I don't have the packet, but some of them were nice and spicy (not a lot of arugula though, I'll plant that this week). I can't wait to get my eggplant plants. My French tarragon that isn't supposed to be hardy is now in year 3, it was green late last week, I hope it survives the story. Always have large sage, need new thyme, basil for later, and I'll do rosemary and bay laurel (neither hardy) again, love them. Time for a day trip to Well-Sweep Herb Farm. Pete, many times my little tomatoes don't make it to the front door. I just consider them an appetizer. Sounds tasty, what time should we be there? Oh, we can't get out of here today, maybe later in the week! ;-))

Well, I an in Northern Illinois, almost the Wisconsin border. We almost always have a frost or two after Mother's Day, so even though they say May 15, I go by the old June 1 for putting in my tomatoes. However, this year we have set some heat records, so I tempted fate by putting some things in early, and sure enough we got 2 frosts within 9 days of each other. My tomatoes were okay, because I had only put in the ones I had wall-o-waters enough to cover. Took them off today and my cherry tomatoes have tiny tomatoes, the others have some blooms, and I am planting direct to the garden the rest of them, mostly the beefsteak and plum kinds, along with a couple of heirlooms. So I would say now is them time, since we are in the same zone.

>It looks like a bumper crop this year.Sure does, dog_wood. Funny how bad last year was, but how incredible this year is! This will probably be the best tomato year of my gardening career. :) Dave, I amended the soil with composted manure before planting the bed, and added plenty of compost, a bit of bone meal, and even some crushed egg shells at the bottom of each planting hole, so I'm pretty sure it's not a nutrient issue. Watering with a drip line, and it never seems over soggy out in the garden, so I think that's good to go too. I appreciate the replies. :)

IMO perfect picking. Our local garden personality says to let the 1st fruit ripen on the vine to trigger ripening of the other fruit. Our climate is cool and slow to ripen finally by the end of summer we have some ripe plus lots of green tomatoes. It's so hard because you're tempted to bring one inside to ripen.

Now that I no longer pick that first one until it's so loose on the stem it almost falls off or has fallen off in the case of cherry tomatoes... I get more ripe ones. It could be in my mind, too.

Once that 1st one ripens, though and the others are at breaker (lightening up and showing a mark at the bottom) I am free to go ahead and pick to bring inside for ripening. Depending on my mood or space inside I do it. I've enjoyed the centerpiece of a plate or bowl of ripening tomatoes on the kitchen table. More for my own entertainment I think that the tomato.
