For one plant, buy the mix as suggested. But, peat moss doesn't have enough nitrate to bother (or help) the blueberry. So long as you are talking about the baled Sphagnum moss peat that is commonly sold in the compressed bales, not reed peat in regular bags such as fertilizer or most mulches and soils come in. That peat may or may not be OK for blueberries and it would be hard to tell without trying it. It could have too high of a pH. It also could be as high as 4-5% nitrogen, but not as nitrate.

Sure - any size or variety of blueberry shrub can be grown well in the ground! In fact they will probably be happier with less fussing on your part in the ground. I have both high bush and low bush blueberries growing wild all over my old farm. For good fruiting, if you are growing the shorter ones, be sure that they are positioned so that they aren't shadowed by taller plants near them. Mulch well with an organic mulch since blueberries have relatively shallow roots and don't like to dry out. The birds like blueberries too, so you may need to cover the shrubs with bird netting as harvest time gets close. Enjoy - blueberries are one of the easiest fruit crops in my experience. As a bonus you get spring flowers and lovely red autumn foliage.

Any blueberry type can be grown in a container.....the restrictions of container growing will just tend to dwarf the larger growing types. Also the dangers of nitrate based ferts are grossly overstated!! Any water soluble fertilizer for acid loving plants will work (MG is just fine).....what they are sensitive to is over-fertilization! Until I moved to a different liquid fertilizer for my container plants, I used MG for acid lovers on my blueberries without ANY detrimental effect. This is also supported by the largest wholesale commercial grower of blueberries in the country - very likely the one that supplies your retail nursery..........they make NO mention of the supposed perils of nitrate based ferts :-)) Holly Tone or any other granular organics do not work efficiently in a container situation. They need the activities of soil organisms to break them down into plant usable forms and there tends to be very few, if any, of these creatures in a commercial potting mix. You may very well wind up starving your plants if you rely on these :-)
