central cali, Here in north georgia we have been in a terrible drought for some years now, as I've heard that most of cali is. I totally agree with you say "Rain really makes a world of difference - especially since we get very little of it", because it's the same over here. If you want a lilac, I happily recommend Lavender Lady. I tried growing an old french lilac I got at walmart last year, and it bloomed... then completely declined. It's flowers were tiny, whereas Lavender Lady had huge flowers of stronger fragrance. (The only thing I must say is that although LL had a stronger scent, the french one had a sweeter, more refined perfume). This year I planted a Blue Skies lilac. As for peonies, I have had the best success with Sarah Bernhardt. However, I would recommend that you spend your money on a pack of peony poppy seeds instead. They may not be as large or have the fragrance, but let me tell you that they are lovely, have a longer bloom season (if planted while it's cool), and I really don't like the scent of my peonies. To me, it is like a combination of a rose and carnation at first, then I notice a disturbing under scent of medicine, and something unpleasant I don't know of. If you want a better perfume, I recommend a good old rose and/or carnation because at least you will enjoy a pure aroma.

Thank you for all the kind comments. They have been a wonderful way to start my day. It's a raining dreary day here and am cuddling our three year old daughter Gracie. Who is very sick with a cold. Her little nose is so stuffed up that her eyes are running. She is a pitiful sight this morning. I read her each of your sweet comments. She just keep saying "aw,so nice", "aw, sweet" and finally exclaimed " I love pink! It's my favorite" I love sharing the garden with the children. Grace is always going with a fist full of flowers. And tells me several times a day that she loves my pretty flowers. Cindy- yes I do keep candles in the lanterns. Although I haven't lite them yet this year. I have been looking forward to lighting them all and sitting out on a warm evening. But for one reason or another I just haven't gotten to it yet. I found the large 18" lanterns early this spring at a local thrift store for $7!!! Every time some mention them I can't resist tell them what I paid for them. I love a bargain!!! Carrie

Jan, I really like that MG picota, I've not seen that one before. I put some growing up the lattice on the side of my shade house in red, white and blue but they don't get enough sun so I only get a couple blooms at a time and not all three at once. Oh Well, the vine looks cool. Jo

No, I don't usually fertilize my hostas...none fertilized this year...occassionally a few were given a little Osmocote or 10-10-10 in years past, but mainly just deep, rich topsoil with plenty of compost. Some have had turkey manure worked in. High in phosphrous which promotes root growth. WARNING: Do not use too much of it! The hostas planted in rows are for three reasons: overflow stock which is commonly given to friends, stock which I haven't planted in my flowerbeds yet, and seedlings from my amateur hybridizing efforts. Yeh Ken, the Color Revolt's are en route right now and should be arriving there shortly! Really, just thought I'd try growing hostas in buckets because I never have before. So far, so good. As far as the Venus dogwoods, I've read 4" flowers, 5", 6", 7" etc. I suppose they stretch it a little. I just got mine and this is the first spring, with maybe about 3 1/2" to 4" flowers. Nice color and shape. So I'm satisfied, even if the flowers don't get much bigger. Thanks for all the compliments...No, I don't have it all figured out myself. Like everything else, gardening is a continual learning process. :)

Thanks nichka! "Gidget" is a golden retriever. She is 2 years old and has lots of energy and really is the sweetest dog in the world. They really are a great breed.

Do you know the genus species name of the grass beside the turquoise pot?

The grass next to the pot is dwarf fountain grass
"hamelin"
If you are not familiar with that plant, it really is a nice grass that gets catapillar type seed heads in the fall. I have it all over the place in the garden and love it.

Beautiful garden! I love the landscaping.. And your dog is absolutely precious! Her coloring looks a little darker than standard Golden Retrievers... She's absolutely beautiful!
