New To Gardening, check out what I did to my front lawn

Hi Everyone,

I'm fairly new to planting flowers and everything. Last year we built a new house and had to do everything from planting our own grass to planting our own flowers. Anyhow, this spring we edged a mulch bed all in the front of our house and down the side. We also planted a bunch of flowers/bushes/lilies, etc. Do you think we have to many just enough plants? I don't want it to look crowded and I want it to flow nicely.

How do you get to your lawn without walking through your flower bed? The shape of the lawn should reflect the flow of foot traffic.

Hmmm... what do you mean? We hardly go out to our front lawn, but when we do need to we just step over the mulch bed (where the lilies are) because it's only about a foot wide. Or if we're in the driveway we enter the grass through there. We even have 2 other doors (One at the back and one on the side) on the house that lead out to the lawn. In other words we really don't have to walk through the mulch bed to get to the lawn or anything like that.

We just wanted to create sort of a scenic front walkway. It's working pretty well so far. It's nice to go out and see the butterflies on the lilies along with the strong smell of the lilac bushes.

Howdy, Looks like a lot of hard work. Been there. But very rewarding.For me gardening is ever changing. Just when you think you're done you realize that a shrub or plant may do better else where so I move it. Yearly the annuals are slightly different. The thing drives me nuts trying to capture the glow of the color. LMAO! One of these years I'm going to buy a new camera that does reds well. I still have both of my old Nikons, bought a Minolta that doesn't do rose photos well. Deb's Grandma couldn't even remember when it was planted. KP was there in the 70s is the best timeline we could come up with. It was in a photo of the yard circa 1972. It may have been planted in the 60s. I wonder how true the new bushes are compared to yours. Once I find one I'll have to compare what I see to yours. Haven't heard from SueBelle since right after Katrina. She and Eddie got through ok. Eddie works for the power company and was very busy. That was the last I heard from her too. Wanda kept telling me that our unknown (Desi) looked like Summer Dream and I kept saying Desi had been here too long to be SD.... Deb's aunt was talking about it a couple years ago. She bought it in 86. I asked if the name was Summer Dream. She was pretty sure it was. Wish Wanda would wander in here to tell me 'I told you so'. I tried emailing her a few months ago (most likely for her birthday in September) but got my email returned. I'll have to send her a card one day to see if her address is still the same. Good luck with the move! Thanks Dave. Thought you might appreciate this picture. This is an eight pack of rooted Lucille Ball. I have a few more, but they are mixed in with my other rooted cuttings. Not as nice as your monster plant, but I'm well on my way! btw, your plants look great! I've tried to root cuttings but haven't had luck.

Thanks Josh. Update: This past week I have had an old raccoon move into my backyard, or at least making it a stop on its nightly foray. It tore apart my bog looking for something to eat! Plus it tore apart a great looking pot of sphagnum. The sphagnum will survive and has been moved into the wired enclosed Selaginella bench along with a tray of moss the critter simply rolled up like a carpet! Looks like I will be trying to get some sphagnum off of eBay when the time comes. I have moved the bog nearer my house and covered it with hardware cloth. Hopefully that will discourage the beast.

Hey, thanks everyone for the comments and link. =O) I'm still over joyed with it and, like you, shocked at how inexpensive it was. I'm really far from wealthy, but I'd pay $100 for that plant! About a month ago I was at the same place just looking for a wandering Jew and got one for $18 (it's really nice and healthy and in an 8 inch pot, but only hangs about 10 inches so it's not at all huge), so I have no clue why this Jade was only $30 (OK, "$29.99" to be exact ;-) ). And I've never seen such a thick trunked/branched one... it looks just like the regular Jade, only with variegated leaves. The only other variegated one's I've ever seen all had really thin and spindly long branches, just like in this pic from ebay (Item number: 190135108132). Tanyag, You must get some nice sun in Houston. I'd love to put my new one (and all of my cacti and whatnot) outside but I'm way too lazy to worry about the rain and transporting everyone in and out and here and there (or maybe I'm just thinking it's more of a pain than it is?). I guess all the rain that yours got was quickly used due to all that hot sun they also got? Sounds great for you (and them) though... are there any pics of yours here to view? I unfortunately have a ridiculously small house and yard(s) where the neighbors are practically on top of me and they all have large trees which block much of the sun out of my back yard... and I wouldn't trust the front with my plants. I doubt anyone would steal them, but you never know what cactiphile is lurking about and ready to pounce!! ;-) So as for this big var. Jade I still haven't gotten to "dissection" yet, but hopefully later tonight or tomorrow (or very soon after that). I'll post update pics after surgery for anyone interested in an update. :O)

Very pretty! Those Hostas are going to be gorgeous when they get really big!

I'm wondering, though, what if you put the lilies between the porch and the Hostas, and put some kind of ground cover where they are currently? I'm not really sure what would be good in your area, maybe alyssum? Portulaca? That way the flow goes from tall to short?

Thanks! We were actually going to put the lilies between the hostas/bushes and our front porch, but it looked a little to crowded since we have bushes hiding behind our hostas... I hope the bushes start to grow lol.

Anyhow, we started to play around with them and figured that they would look pretty nice by the walkway so people could see them as they came to the door.

Had you considered placing the asiatic lilies behind the hostas? Maybe use either 3, 5 or 7 bulbs/plants in a grouping. Probably the 7 might be too much. Do you have your date set on your camera? I've decided that is a good thing to have. One can keep track of time certain flowers usually bloom, or keep a record for another reason. You can always move stuff around later if you don't like it the first year. I like that red door a lot better than the white one! What about if you used the same color scheme in your flowerbeds as in your containers on the porch? Looks like you've got room for some nice porch sitting furniture and a small table in between the chairs.
