circular challenged, need ideas

I have not been satisfied in my various plantings of the small center garden and container in the middle of the round brick path. It may be that I cannot plant in a circle. Ideally, I'd like to do something that wouldn't require a new planting every season. Any ideas?

Hi there.

I was looking at your photo, noticed everything does a great job of 'pointing' to that central area. HOWEVER, did you notice that larger shrub, which is blooming right now in the picture, well it's taking the viewer's eye away from the center. Maybe you could transplant that shrub, first.

As far as what to plant there, Let me think . . . . .
It would be nice to plant something with a large leaf, that might keep your attention because everything else seems to have a smaller leaf. Maybe a large-leaf hosta would be nice there.

I could see a hydrangea there instead.

You could use the center area as if it were a planter - and create an arrangement of plants, with a nice tall something in the middle then circular plantings around that. Personally I would have a ball with changing annuals year after year - but there are plenty of perennials you can use there instead, depending on what colors you use around your home.

what i would do and this is just my opinion. I would do the outer edge in purple or dark blue lobelia and then a inner area in snow in summer or some other white ground cover and then that center pot i would put things that vine along with flowers with some eyepopping color. I think that would also tie the bush in that is a georgous bush i dont think i would move it or take it out. If this is a summer picture and I am assuming it is not because whatever is over that trellis the flowers are not blooming. If it is a summer picture that area really needs lots of color. Something else you could do is take that flower pot out of the center move it elsewhere like on the deck at the start of the picture and put a nice water feature there, that area really needs a nice focal point in my opinion. That is a great area. If this is a spring shot and i think it is a recently taken picture you need more color in that area that blooms early spring, I would get things that bloom early spring and last through fall if it was me. And consider winter interest also. I love the way that trellis and the bushes draws you further back and peeks your interest into exploring further. Really a nice thought out area, and alot of work went into that. You can really tell it is a labor of love.

You seem to have established a summer-blooming theme so continue with shrubs that bloom in summer - if you want to run with that. Or you could go with a tropical effect. Visits to independent garden centers with sales staff that may actually be well-versed in plants and planting, asking about what they have that blooms in summer (or looks tropical) should turn up lots - especially if you visit during summer (start nosing around now and then make subsequent forays through the growing season). You will find that the magnolia drops rubbish for months at a time, hopefully this will not be an annoyance. So far your place looks like you want it to be very tidy. This cultivar is also prone to mildew problems in this area, if it develops patchiness on the leaves that causes them to drop prematurely and produce a gaunt aspect, then you will have joined the club. Not all specimens seen here are affected, but many are.

Chocolate Budino serves 6-8 2 extra large eggs 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 1/4 cups heavy cream, plus more for topping 1 cup whole milk 2 cups coarsely crumbled biscotti, cookie, or dry cake 3 1/2 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder 1/3 cup cocoa powder, sifted Line an 8-inch cake pan with plastic wrap, leaving a few inches of overhang on all edges. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar. Add the cornstarch and continue whisking until no lumps remain. In a medium saucepan, bring the cream and milk to a simmer. Remove from the heat and pour 1 cup of the mixture into the eggs and sugar, whisking constantly to temper the eggs. Pour the egg mixture into the saucepan with the milk and cream. Return the pan to medium heat and whisk continuously until the custard thickens, about 8-10 minutes. Do not let the mixture come to a rolling boil. Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate, cookie, vanilla extract, espresso powder, and cocoa powder. Stir until combined and until the chocolate has completely melted. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan and cover with plastic wrap, laying it directly on top of the pudding. Refrigerate until set, at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. To serve, remove the top sheet of plastic wrap, invert the pudding onto a serving plate, and remove the plastic wrap. Garnish with more cookies, grated chocolate, and lightly sweetened whipped cream. This is just a guess without seeing the floor plan but I think I would be inclined to take the dark granite off the fireplace and make the whole area including the alcove look like one feature wall ...shelving,cabinets and tv. Something simple to jive with the kitchen. Then, I would mostly just ignore trying to make use of just the fireplace section as a feature. It would then be a larger section of feature with the alcove included and you could float some furniture and have better use of the space. Maybe not just like the picture...but you get the idea. Edited to add: this way you could start your area rug all the way down from fireplace toward sliders. It will make your space appear larger.

Everything except the rug and lampshade are off of the greater Monterey area Craigslist. Chair-$229 Sofa-$600 (I think this is actually a set with a loveseat, which you may or may not want) Side table-$25 Lamp-$695 (yes, this is ridiculously expensive; it sounded as if it were from a known artist.) Art-$100 Rug (Overstock.com)- $456 Lampshade (Target)-$35 Total: $2139 While chasing down Craigslist items can be a time-consuming pain, if you want a furnished room in ten days, you may not have time to purchase something new. I think it would be a challenge to get something delivered withing two weeks from most retailers. Plus, getting everything you want at the price you want would be a challenge.
