Blueberry variety selection

I have decided to add blueberries to my collection of trees and berries as our daughter seems to be something of a fruit bat. We are in the South Bay Area in California, zone 9B. The plot is about 3' X 13' clay soil in between two concrete driveways, although I'll probably amend with some sand, compost, and ammonium sulfate (?) to acidify.

Are blueberry roots problematic for the surrounding concrete? I did not install root barriers to protect the concrete as that seemed somewhat overkill for non-tree roots. But please inform me if I am mistaken.

My goals are to spread out the harvest season, of course. I tend to like some acid to go with the sugar in my fruit. I have heard good things about Sweet Crisp, and supposedly Pink Lemonade is an interesting variety. But I know very little about which varieties are best, so hope you can help with selection.

How many plants should I put in a 13' row? How large do they get?

Blueberry roots won't hurt a thing. I recently repotted one after 7 years and there were few roots on the outside of the rootball.

A raised bed would be better than ammending clay soil. In the Southeast they are grown in beds of woodchips or other organic matter piled in beds. But that might make watering more critical.

You probably heard of Sweetcrisp here from me. I think it's the best eating experience but I like really sweet and crunchy, you might not. To me blueberries are either sweet or sour, not much in between.

I like Star because it's the earliest I have, easy to pick, and pretty good fruit. Sweetcrisp is a few weeks later. So you need one later variety as three plants are about all that will fit in 13ft. You might consider Revillie if you get at least a moderate amount of chilling, 500 hrs.

Zone 9B I would think your getting on average about 300 chill hours + or - 100. I havent tried growing them in our gumbo clay over here in Houston but havent heard anything positive about blueberries in clay? I would go with raised bed also or pots. Ive got 6 raised beds and several pots but to me the raised bed seem to be more robust than the potted. Now that being said you could get more plants per sq ft if using pots and make the raised beds into something like blackberries or something? Space those 2 or 3 feet.

You just missed the Urban Harvest Fruit Tree Sale that had all those varieties except SnowChaser. I believe Brightwell is pretty common as Ive seen it in several nurserys here on the south side of Htown. You can take your chances with Florida Hill Nursery for the Snowchaser. Thats where mine came from. Sweetcrisp seems hard to locate lately. Some one will chim in with a heads up on Sweetcrisp. Remember if you get a rabbiteye you need a couple varieties for cross pollination. Just Fruits and Exotics has the best selection of rabbiteyes that Ive seen from a nursery. I second the recommendation for "Li" jujube. Asian pears are not considered low maintenance here because of fireblight, otherwise I'd have them on my landscaping plan. For taste and texture, "Korean Giant" is my favorite asian. "Housi" and "Shinko" are more popular, although "Housi" is more susceptible to fire flight. "Korean Giant" has BIG fruit, and ripens very late (mid to late Sept here), so you might want to be sure that'll work in your area. KG is also a good pollenizer for other varieties -- not all variety combinations make good pairs for pollenation.

My two cents - Berries Unlimited is a very good source for blueberries. I'm fortunate enough to live in close driving distance, so I've been to their facility several times. Of course, when picking them out in person, they'll give you the best plants they have, but all of them look outstanding. The owners there are extremely knowledgable and are eager to answer any question. They're selection is good, but they definitely are a bit conservative, working mostly with older, well-known cultivars such as Toro, Spartan, Elliott, Bluecrop, Duke, etc. My favorites so far: Early - Spartan (a somewhat finicky, but delicious cultivar) and Reka (very vigorous and excellent flavor) Middle - Bluecrop, Blueray, Ozarkblue (this is a late-middle variety in my area) Late - Elliott My Earliblue is highly vigorous - growing in the southern-most zone recommended for northern high bush seems to create a niche where the early varieties do particularly well. I planted it to extend the season, but by reputation the taste is somewhat average (any homegrown berry is better than supermarket). My hedgerow in the front yard, so whenever possible I've planted varieties that have high landscape value (all blueberries are attractive, but some are better than others) and that look good together with similar growth habit. I fnd Elliot to be the most attractive of the bunch, although ornamental quality - like flavor - is highly subjective.

Thanks, I've seen Nourse mentioned on Garden Web. They have a good reputation here. I'm buying locally first and then will buy from nursuries in the fall to fill in whatever gaps I still have. So far I've bought plants from Ocean State Job Lot and Tractor Supply. Job Lot has Jersey, Bluecrop, and Blueray --- these same varieties are also sold at Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart around here. Tractor Supply had Patriot and Northland. I passed on Patriot because it supposedly is susceptible to late frosts. I've maintained blueberries before so I know what it takes to deal with an established patch, but this is one planted probably 60 years ago. I've never had to establish one. Look up "spotted wing drosophila", it's a new invasive fruit fly that hits soft ripening fruit. We got it at the tail end of July in my grandfather's patch a town over. It's best to try to avoid later blueberries and fall bramble crops because of this. One thing besides spraying that I've seen helps with controlling these bugs is a healthy hummingbird population.

I think even better than a raised bed would be enclosed containers. 3x13' is a lot but you can get acid mix soil bases from some of the local San Jose rockery/nurseries. Our soil pH is too high and it will win over whatever pH you amend the soil to. It will be a battle to keep it down.

Check these results out from a Santa Clara blueberry trial by SCMG...

FYI Costco of all places gets some nice mature blueberries in during the spring. Right now you can find Four Winds and Monrovia stock at all the Big Box stores and local nurseries.

I would suggest planting blueberries in pots with an eye toward low pH potting medium, and would offer Sunshine Blue as a proven performer here in So Cal.
