Baby Cockatiels

I wanted to show off my new baby cockatiels....Mango on right and Cosmo on left......

They are both 4 weeks old today, but this is a picture of the day they were born! I'll try to get some more recent photos of them up later!

So cute Genny! I assume you have the parent birds, as well? They must be very tame to let you handle the babies. Congratulations on your new arrivals! I look forward to watching them grow (which means you need to post pictures to keep us updated - :))

Hi Balsam, yeah I have the mom and dad, Peaches and Sunny. They are pretty tame and will let me stick my hand in to pick the babies up and to get them out to clean their cages. I'll post some more pictures as soon as I can get them developed! They have changed tremendously from the photo I sent though!

gennym, I have 2 dogs,5 cats,aviary of finches with 2 doves(a full nest of finch eggs about to hatch too!) ,3 turtles,3 hens 1 rooster,2 ducks, 5 rabbits..and had a potbelly pig! keeps me busy along with my 1 year old baby boy! Not sure what I'll get in the spring,I'll see how well the winter goes I guess...want to make sure everyone's well taken care of,then I'll go from there. I'll probably rescue 2 again.. bye for now..

oxmyx, yes a very slippery slope indeed. You forgot about the poor fish! LOL. Hooks in thier mouths, people slit thier bellies open and gut them while they are still flopping. Yes we are a big fishing and hunting family here :) I agree that the chickens that are raised in tiny cages where they can barely even stand up, so they can be fattened for market is inhumane. I am sometimes guilty of not knowing whether the ones I buy are free ranged or the prior. I feel bad for the cows too. I used to work in a hospital near a large meat packing plant in Kansas at one time. The details are really disgusting-not only concerning the meat but the workers/health issues and horrible accidents in that place- now that really made me want to become a vegan! But I am not a vegetarian and love a good steak once in a while so I am just as guilty as anyone else who isn't lol. There should be a better way. I think they should be at least raised humanly and when slaughtered for market..at least in a quick way. This reminds me of one of my son's teachers who said, she used to live in the Middle East and when the Prince would visit, the people would line camels up on the side of the road and tie them down and cut their heads off right there, to have a feast/celebration! That is really creepy but funny about the spider burglars...Imagine it getting on the loose and breeding all over the place. We would all be in for a big shock. No telling what species get into the U.S. and how. I think it might be cool to work at customs in somewhere like Miami just to see what all people are smuggling in by ship! There should be a reality show on that LOL! My dd wants a snake! It is a tiny albino looking cornsnake I think. She keeps going down to the pet store to see/hold it. The worker told her she can feed it frozen 'pinkies' (baby mice). I love snakes but this is gonna get bigger lol. Can you feed a huge snake frozen mice when it is huge?

Rats and veggie garden-- help!

We live in Bonita as well and dealt with rats earlier this year. They had a field day in my gardening shed and ate my heirloom tomatoes just as they got ripe in the garden! We tried repellant sprays ( do not waste money there), traps caught a couple mice nothing else and cleaning out the shed and dousing everything with ammonia. The ammonia worked for a couple of days and that was it. After they began to brazenly climb on the compost pile and make tons of noise in the shed at night we finally, after much discussion, put out poison. In 2 locations that our cat could not get at. In about 5 days we had 2 very dead rats and peace and quite. I garden organically so this was about a 4 month process of losing garden produce while trying different ways to deter them. Once hubby even chased them with a shovel around the garden area and banged against the shed walls every time he was in there.

I agree they make great little pets. My little girl Happy must be going on about 4 years old now. I got her from the SPCA a few years ago, she had been well looked after but her owner couldn't keep her in the apartment and hated to give her up. For a tiel mine is very quiet, rarely whistling unless she can hear me coming up the steps, trying to get my attention I suppose. Absolutely loves to come in the shower, she sits on the shower rod and spreads her wings for me to splash her. You can't eat any spaghetti or pasta without her kicking up a fuss to get out and get some off the plate either. I don't cover her, she never liked it from the time I got her, she just goes to sleep regardless if the lights on or not. I have a nightlight plugged in near her cage and that has helped stop any night frights. Like any budgie I'd advise getting your tiel accustomed to eating veggies asap so they know what they are. Leave it too late and there's the possibility they may never try them. They all need a variety of greens in the diet (not iceberg lettuce though as it contains nothing much and they eat it like candy) Just things like brocolli, carrots, and hot peppers which most birds relish even if you don't. What I do with all my birds is take a bit of bread and some veggies and puree it in one of those mini electric food processors (about $8 at Walmart). Or you can just puree a few chunks of vegetable and mix it in with a couple of tablespoons of cooked cous cous. To cook that small amount of cous cous,, just heat about 3 tablespoons of water in a cup in the microwave, about 40 seconds, and spoon in 2 tablespoons of cous cous, it softens up almost instantly and absorbs the water, then mix the purreed veggie stuff in it.. quick and easy and I haven't found a bird yet that doesn't love it.

My baby finches are now out of the nest and feeding on their own...awsome to watch isn't it? :) Can you please tell me how I can post a pic like you did? I would love to show off some pics too! thanks I'll be waiting for your reply....

I go to Photobucket.com and make an account there. Then after you've made an account click on the browse button and select which picture you want to upload from your computer. After that then click the upload button. It takes about 3-4 minutes for it to load all the way.
Your pictures will be saved on your account at that web-site from then on so you can go back and download more or see the ones you downloaded any time you want.

Nice going! and Congrats! I loved birds, and was one of those rare kids that did well with them. Did I ever mention that I raised a sparrow from infancy, a little older than your cockatiel babies?

I didn't realize at the time how strongly they could imprint. When it was time to release her, she wasn't going anywhere, firmly! ...so we kept her. Cricket-cricket was so tame that I regularly took her for walks on my shoulder when I lived in a basement apartment so she too could enjoy sunshine and fresh air. She lived for TEN YEARS! and opted to leave the planet just as we were preparing to move to our hobby farm in the country.

SHe was so beloved to us, and so sorely missed that, although we're by no means official, we named our enterprise after her - 'Lil Cricket Farm'.

That is such a sweet story, LF & RJ! I hope I have all my birds that long. My oldest cockatiel is only 2, but I have a cockatoo that's 10 this year :)
