squash blossoms?

Hi, I was wondering how long a squash blossom stays alive after it opens up? I noticed that mine open in the morning and are almost dead by afternoon. I'm worried they are not getting pollinated. I would try to hand pollinate but am having trouble deciphering female from male. This particular squash plant is a scalloped sunburst squash, so I don't know if the female flowers will be swollen in the shape of a tiny oval shaped squash, or if they will be swollen in the shape of the scalloped squash. Man I hope that makes sense! I have read a few posts here about hand pollination, I just don't feel confident in identifying the male flower. do the female blossoms of some squash plants look different? Thanks anyone who can help me.
