Question about Mulberry purchases...
Comments (2)Both got good reviews from Dr. AJ Bullard, the long-time NAFEX Southern mulberry guru. In one of his writings, he characterized Shangri-La as "Pakistan"'s little brother'. Silk Hope was good enough that he and Mike McConkey jumped through whatever hoops were required to import it and introduce it....See MoreMulberry tree questions
Comments (11)mulberry.. especially the black or purple ones... i spend about 2 months with purple stains from bird poop on my cars .... kids with feet died purple during the same two months... then a third month of rotting, fermenting fruit stinking up the grass .... every time i mow the lawn under them .. not to mention the stoned insects feeding off the gelatinous goo ... which can attack after getting spooked ... but for the fact.. that the kids eat them ... and adore them .. i have no personal use for them ... i forgot to mention their shallow invasive yellow roots .... i have 3 20 to 30 foot trees on the perimenter of the 5 acres... which is just fine.. but had to remove a 75 foot male ... stunnning tree... just useless in my world... as i like to plant and grow things under trees .... when the kids move on ... the trees will mysteriously die .... probably by a liberal application of a chainsaw at or above ground level .... if you want to feed the animals ... there just has to be something better... especially if you are limited in lot size.. in suburbia .... now.. keep up the good work ... being retired... ken PS: you have never enjoyed being lied to ... like when a 3 to 5 year old.. walks up to you... feet purple from the ankles down .... purple smeared .. literally ear to ear ... across the forehead ..... and all over the pants and shirt.... and when you ask ...HAVE YOU BEEN EATING MULBERRIES .... looks angelically into your eyes.. and says ..NOPE ... rotflmbo .... i guess i have one use for the mulberry.. a great memory .... both the boy and the girl.. near the same age.. 5 years apart ......See MoreBlack Mulberry Questions
Comments (2)Maybe you mean Pakistani? They produce the extremely long berries. This is mine's second year. I've noticed a few green berries forming, yet my other mulberries are ripening now, so it appears much later than the others, unless mine is an anomaly. Gary...See MoreMulberry questions
Comments (2)The ones that make pollen are males the ones that don't are females I think that It's okay to top the mulberries off at the height you want but don't overprune. I have mulberries in my neighborhood and they're GIANT, while other types are dwarfs, so it depends on the variety. If you REALLY want them to stay small, you might have to sacrifice the three IF you know they'll get big. Hope your trees do well Here's some Info I found Pruning: No special pruning techniques are needed after the branches have been trained to a sturdy framework, except to remove dead or overcrowded wood. A mulberry tree can be kept to a tidy form by developing a set of main branches, and then pruning laterals to 6 leaves in July in order to develop spurs near the main branches. It is not advisable to prune the trees heavily since the plant is inclined to bleed at the cuts. Cuts of more than two inches in diameter generally do not heal and should be avoided at all cost. The bleeding will be less severe if the tree is pruned while it is dormant. http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/mulberry.html...See Moretheaceofspades
