how far north with goldrush

How far north are folks getting goldrush to ripen?
How many days on average from blossom?
The season has gotten noticeably longer up here the past 5-10 years. It has me wondering about trying for some longer season apples and accepting years I don't make it all the way.

This year's stats from my records:
4/16- First Goldrush blossom opened

9/12- Picked first 2 apples (one due to a yellow jacket hole and another due to a crack). They were OK, but not great with 13-14 brix.

10/5- First pretty good apple, in 16 brix area

10/23- Some really nice apples, peaking at 19.7 brix. I didn't have any later ones, as I picked the rest rather than brave the hurricane/nor'easter.

Given that this year had the early spring you may want to add a few weeks to these dates.

I think Goldrush is a good apple to try, as even not-fully-ripe it is pretty good. If you can get the ones I had in early October, it is definitely worth growing. If all you ever get is the September 12th version, I'm not sure.

Cummins says that GR ripens at their site near Ithaca, NY, which is colder than here in the Detroit area, 100% of the time. In fact, Trumansburg, where Cummins is, is colder than Ithaca. GR used to be absent here, but now winters are shorter, summers are longer, and I am not the only one who has planted some.

Well I know the timing and sequence won't correspond exactly but that is helpful Scott. I just came across one chart that has it just prior to or with honeycrisp, which overlaps RdR for me. If that's the case I shouldn't have any trouble with it. Scott, are you saying Rubinette ripens close to goldrush? I thought it was quite a bit earlier? I had heard folks are getting ripe rubinette in the north, but to my knowledge goldrush just is not happening. Perhaps the cultivars behave differently moving north? You have me nervous as I have a rubinette in this years tree orders

Key growing bananas here about 65 miles west of Savannah put in a area going to be wet like white sand with water near by close to pond edge works. When I planted mind was in sand area with wild carpet grass. You need to fertilize heavy so make fruit in shorter growing season mind show fruit only in October cut off by watching weather don't let freeze the fruit. A cane will only make fruit one time go clump get bigger and bigger. This same grow happen all way up into Tennessee 5-10-15 fertilizer (15) make potassium there for Bananas.

Insulation? How far up North Wall?

Everything I have read says that it is best to insulate the North side of the greenhouse. That depends upon what you're going to do with the greenhouse. Are you hoping to grow in it year-round? Have you calculated the heating costs? I put a link below that will help. I think you'll find that even with one insulated wall, your heat will still escape rapidly through the non-insulated portion. Whether it's windows or plastic, the r-value of the clear material will be very low. Also, roll-up sides work much better when two opposing sides can be opened, so as to make a cross breeze. How far north are your palms growing?

Hamilton 43Â° 16' N 79Â° 54' W All palms protected here. While we are fairly mild here these years, we do have some pretty harsh deep freezes.. like....... THIS YEAR!!!! ):D We've reached -16.5C (2F) for a day and then the last 2-3 weeks with dips down to -15C (5F) night to -10C (14F). So, due to that, I'm just too chichen to really leave any palm unprotected to fend for itself. But, here's our current list of palms that are protected and with that, doing very well: - 2, Washingtonia Robustas (1 in the portable hoop greenhouse, the other, in the middle of the back yard with its own little structure/heated). - 3 Chamaerops humilis (2 in ground in hoop house, 1 in pot) - 3 Rhapidophyllum hystrix (all in pots, hang'n out with the Washie outside) - 3 Trachycarpus Fortunei (all in pots). 1 or 2 may be planted this spring - 1 Trachycarpus Takil (planted and protected by its own little structure/heated) - 1 Triangle Palm (I think it may be Neodypsis decaryi, but not sure; in pot of course, too sensitive to be planted) - 4 or 5 Livistona chinensis. All now in pots. Had 1 planted which made it fine the first year. But died the 2nd year because I didn't dry out the structure first and didn't apply any heat, so it went to mush.) I think that's it. So yes, all protected up here and can't wait for the end of March, early April.

With those brix shouldn't GR be freeze hardy later on in the year?

Z4 would probably not work- at least for a few more years, except on exceptionally long seasons. With the seemingly accelerated global warming it's hard to say what will ripen where in another ten years. Hard to believe things will keep warming up at the current rates but the farther north you are the more the affect according to what I've been reading lately.

4/16-10/23 (or it's comparable) I could just about do the last 2 years. Spring a bit later but no killing freeze until into November. How long this trend will run and if it's getting longer yet is hard to say, but I am glad I put northern spy in years ago...at the time they were considered a reach to fully ripen every year, now a non-issue.
And I can live with every other year or so if I have to for something good.

Keep in mind that Goldrush is not an early bloomer- this year it was about a week after some of my other apples (Hudson's Golden Gem was first). You may want to put it in a warm micro-climate to ensure it opens up a bit earlier than it normally would. That's what I've done with my 2nd Goldrush (a few feet from a ~8' stone retaining wall with SW exposure). It is a year younger and hasn't flowered yet, but I'll keep an eye on it this spring to see how much impact it has.
