The Lowes here had the best looking plants for sale, They were well established (looks-wise) multiple branches, looked about 4 times bigger than the bare root plants I ordered from a local blueberry grower here. If memory serves, they were $10 each. And if I had not purchased so many other plants already (most of what I bought I bought for resale), they would have seemed very worth trying. Again, just the size difference from what you normally see for sale and these (normally you see ones that look like one smaller than a pencil branch maybe with a few lateral branches, but very puny) was pretty significant.

Putting down a mulch after you weed can prevent some of them from coming back from roots left behind. I use a lot of straw mulch, because it's cheaper than bark mulch, but I live on acreage so it's more acceptable than it might be on a city lot. I will also lay down newspapers or cardboard with a mulch on top to kill off weeds, much easier than pulling them all and it benefits the soil too. It won't stop blackberries, though. They'll just come up through it, as will thistle. Be careful of what you let go to seed. Birds will transport them to other areas and some can be invasive, choking out native plants. Your rhododendron won't have blooms next year where you trimmed it, just to warn you. It will the following year, though if you don't cut it back again. A lot of people whack them back to get a fuller plant. You'll learn a lot through successes and failures along the way, just as I still do. That's what's nice about gardening, you never quit learning. If I'd had the internet when I was gardening in my youth, I'd be way ahead by now! I started gardening before I was ten. My grandmother lived with us and she let me have a little plot in her garden, so I spent a lot of time tending that little piece of land. Then in my teens I took over the vegie garden. My grandmother had a small greenhouse that I grew cacti in too, so that was a fun diversion from the outside plants. Enjoy your days in the garden and take some pictures to show us your progress.

I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. Also, the next door neighbor that I took some newspaper from her bin comes over to where I'm adding to the compost bin and I'm in my pj's, coat and NEW BLUE RUBBER BOOTS and asks, "What do I have there?" I told her what I was up to and told her I was raking up the leaves in the ditch, clearing up the grass, etc. She said I could have all the leaves I want and I asked about the newspaper and she said she'll just leave the bin by my compost bin. LOL Not quite the garbage bag full of Starbuck's coffee grounds, but I'm sure it will make a nice tea! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. It's going to be another long post. I don't live in the U.S, so I haven't got a clue on how cold or warm zone 5a is. The most important thing when deciding the right blueberry cultivar for your area is - how many chill units/hours do you get (on average) in winter? Blueberry plants need to expose to a certain amount of chill hours over winter in order to bloom and fruit properly in spring and summer. If they don't get enough chill hours, they will produce very small amount of berries or not at all. To find out how much chill hours you're getting in your area. Go here. http://getchill.net/ click on the wunderMap to locate a weather station near you, write down the station name and type it in the fields on the getchill website. Check the total winter chill hour for each year, 2014, 2015 and 2016. There might not be any weather data for the older years. Chill units/hours are temperature between 33 to 45 degree fahrenheit, or 0 to 7.5 degree celcius. Temperature below freezing or above 48 degree will not count or add to the accumulated chill hours. Northen highbush cultivar is high chill and requires between 800 to 1000 chill hours and can tolerate below freezing temperate in winter. Southern highbush cultivar is low chill and only requires anywhere from 150 to 400 chill hours. While rabbiteyes requires 400 to 700 chill hours. You can grow southern highbush and rabbiteyes in high chill/cold area just as long they are protected from frost and extreme cold temp in winter and early spring. You can't grow northern highbush in warm area because they won't break dormancy if they don't get enough chill hours, hence delay in vegetative bud break and growth in spring. I live in Melbourne Australia and we get an average of 750 to 850 of chill hours in winter. We don't get snow but we do get frost every now and then on clear cold night. I have collected 19 different varieties so far, 6 northern highbushes, 8 southern highbushes and 5 rabbiteyes. It's currently mid winter here and all my northern highbushes have shed their leaves (half of them lost their leaves by late autumn). Most of my southern highbushes still have their full leaves. So far, None of the rabbiteyes lose any leaves, I noticed the leaves are much thicker and waxy looking than northern and southern highbush cultivar's. I grow all my blueberries in plastic containers and so it's very easy for me to move my sourthern highbushes inside the greenhouse when the temp is expected to drop below freezing. I put them all on the trolley and drag them in, It's good exercise :) If you are planning to grow your blueberries in soil, make sure that the soil ph level is at 4.5 to 5.5 otherwise they'll have a tough time growing in it. Strawberries and blackberries requires a higher soil ph of 5.5 to 6.5. Once you have determined the average chill hours in your area, choose the right cultivar family, northern highbush, southern highbush or rabbiteyes. Choose 2 different varieties that blooms around the same time. E.g. Very early season, early-mid season, mid season, mid-late season or very late season.
