Eggs disappear from nest

I have a Black Australorp who has been sitting a nest since October 15 or so (about two weeks). When I first discovered it, I marked the five eggs she was on 1-5, and I have been removing the extras every day.

Yesterday I went to mark the eggs and I only found 1-4. Where did egg number 5 go? I got so worried that I came inside and candled the eggs I'd taken away yesterday and they seem to all be fresh eggs (I'm no expert, but I did see lots of photos online of eggs progressing in development, so I hope I was right). Do the other chickens sometimes eat the eggs? That's the only thing I can imagine. I would hate to find out that I put a 2-week-developed egg into someone's egg carton -- yech!

Any ideas?
