Please Help Me Save My Dying Avocado Tree!
Comments (7)I have to disagree with jean001 a little. New potting soil (looks like yours has some perlite as well) will not compact and/or dry out such that it pulls away from the edge of the pot, and water runs right through without wetting it. Given the size of your pot, and the amount you're watering, I'd say it's been too wet. Avocados like well-drained soil, on the slightly dry side. A new tree, with few roots to absorb and transpire water, doesn't require much. As it grows and water needs increase, it can use more, but easy does it. As jean001 suggested, growing in a pot is MUCH different than in the ground. Care must be taken to maintain the correct soil moisture. There are perhaps a few avocado varieties that will produce in a container, but it would have to be a very large container. Also, you'll get few, if any, fruits, without cross-pollination. If you maintain a drier pot, and keep an eye on moisture levels further down in the mix before watering, it's possible your tree will come back. The way it's looking at the moment, I'd give it about a 30-40% chance. Also, small avocados are prone to sunburn -- don't keep it in direct sun all day. Shade it slightly, and/or paint the trunk. -Bruce...See MoreAnyone know where to find 'Holiday' Avocado tree?
Comments (17)Bought mine at Green Thumb in Van Nuys 5 years ago. FInally has fruit this year. I think I made the mistake of under-feeding it so it basically starved all those years. This year I used Citrus-Tome (found it at Home Depot or OSH) and it may be coincidence but it's now bearing fruit-- big, beautiful, luscious green avocados. Can't wait to harvest! The tree has grown to about 12 feet with a nice umbrella spread of branches. I spread half a bag (1.5 pounds) of Citrus-Tome under the tree on top of the dead leaves every month and water it well. Leaf drop is minimal since I started feeding it and I see new leaves and branches all the time. Admittedly, I don't know much about growing avocados but this has turned out well for me. I think I paid $29.99 at Green Arrow and had one of their Gardener Club coupons....See MoreMy Choquette avocado tree.
Comments (27)If you are still curious, the Choquette should be about four years old before setting any fruit so that the trunk size is sufficient to support the weight of mature fruit. I had a very mature (over 20 yrs) tree split down the center from too many fruits that become quite heavy in this variety. I have not found the Choquette to have pollination difficulties with the nearest avocado tree 100 ft. away, although I do have two wild bee hives on my property. As to the Russell mentioned in another post, I find this variety to have excellent flavor when allowed to ripen. The fruits are very large and elongated and will show a slight yellow tint well before they are really ready, so you need to wait for signs of softening before picking, assuming animals haven't gotten there first....See MoreAnyone else growing a Don Gillogly Avocado Tree
Comments (0)Bought my tree from Roger's Gardens about 4 1/2 years ago. Was told it wouldn't grow taller than 8 to 12 feet and could be grown in a barrel. Well....tree did horribly in a barrel, so I planted it in the ground last year. It grew about 8 feet and then a second shoot starting growing and is about 14 feet now! Are these trees supposed to have two trunks? Also this is the first time the tree has produced fruit. Most of the avocados fell off, but I have about 5 left on the tree. They've been there for about 4 months...how do I know when to pick them? Called Roger's Gardens to ask about the tree, and was told they didn't know much about them...like how big did they really get...or how much fruit do they really produce? (Since they are the ones selling this tree, this is really disappointing to me. I also notice that they didn't seem to have any last time I was there.) So is anyone else trying to grow this tree and are they having much luck? I really REALLY wanted a dwarf tree as I have a small backyard. Is this thing going to grow into a giant and am I even going to have more than two to three avocados a year? Would love to hear from anyone else who has this tree. Thanks...See MoreEggo
