Anyone know where to get 'Dixie Gem' or 'Dixigem' peach trees?
Comments (1)Try the U-pick and tell them you can't find it anywhere. They may have a source or be willing to sell you some budwood. These old peach varieties are very hard to find, nobody seems interested in keeping them around and many have been lost forever. Google pulled up a U-Pick in Oregon with the peach which may be the place you visited, see link below. Note I expect Dixigem and Dixie Gem are the same. Comments (2)The only places I know that might sell Whitsell would be either Laguna Hills Nursery in Laguna Hills, or Atkins Nursery in Fallbrook. Neither anywhere near you, unfortunately. However, you might contact both places to see if they know where to find Whitsell in your area of CA. Wondering why you want Whitsell? Not the best avo out there. I'm wondering if you're trying to put together a smaller A/B combo. If so, I would try to find Gwen (A) and Edranol (B). Both are very good tasting avos, and will stay fairly compact (that's a relative term with regard to an avocado tree). I would try contacting your local Calif. Rare Fruit Growers chapter to see if any of their members can point in in the best direction for Whitsell, or any other good avo cultivars. Another option is to contact Epicenter Avocados. They are located in Santa Cruz county, and they grow several of the lesser known, but excellent avo varieties that do well in cooler climates. They are very nice folks. Patty S. Comments (5)I grow it every year. It does great here. It is C. moschata, so it rarely is bothered by the squash vine borers that bother other types of squash. Or, if they attempt to tunnel into the plant vines and stems, they give up because the vines are solid, not hollow like C. pepo and C. maxima types of squash. I've been growing it for roughly 5 years here and have grown Early Bulam and Teot Bat Put. I buy the hybrid seed from Kitazawa Seed, which I'll link below. Seed probably also is available from other companies, mostly likely Evergreen Seed which also specializes in oriental varieties. I usually use regular old yellow crookneck squash for my first summer squash planting because, if I plant it early enough, I can get a good harvest from the early planting before the squash vine borers show up and kill the plants. I usually plant it in early April (sometimes in March if southern OK warms up early) and harvest in May and June. About a month after I plant yellow crookneck, I plant the avocado squash seeds. That way, the avocado squash plants are up, growing, blooming and sometimes even producing before the SVBs arrive in large enough numbers to kill the yellow crookneck. I've already purchased seed for another variety of Korean squash (shaped like zucchini, not like an avocado) to grow next year. It is on the same page as the avocado squash at the Kitazawa website.
