Pigs can be a lot of fun to have around and are very smart. For an 8 week out I would mix warm water in her food. They appreciate the warm water in the winter too. Make sure she has access to shade and fresh water at all times.
Like most animals, pigs are food motivated. If you plan on keeping this one for a pet you shouldn't feed it as you would a freezer pig. Give her plenty of veggies along with her food and she will enjoy fruits too.
As far as bonding with her. Piglets have a reflex to move away from momma pig so they don't get smashed when she lays down. So when you go to pet the piglet make movements toward her from underneath of her. Not by bringing your hand down towards her like you would pat a dog. Come up from the ground with your hand to scratch under her chin and rub her belly. It shouldn't take too long before you can just give her a scratch on her butt or back. They do outgrow that reflex eventually.
She might have charged at your daughter because she just isn't sure how to act with people. Set guidelines with her after she has had a little time to settle in. No biting at all is permissable. Tell her NO if she nips. If that doesn't work give her a thump on the nose, but not to hurt or injure her, just to reinforce the NO.
As far as having her with the chickens they seem to get along pretty well. I have chickens that sit on the pigs backs. But keeping the pig out of the chicken food will be a problem. Never underestimate a pig that wants to get into a feeder. I think the easiest way of taking care of that is to put the chicken feeder up out of the pigs reach.
I'm curious why you didn't get a pot bellied pig. The pots still get big, but not as large as a farm pig. And it has been my experience that the pots aren't as destructive as a farm pig.
You need to keep a close watch on the dog and pig. They are natural enemies and when a piglet is squealing even the best dogs get upset enough to attack them. I think that high pitch squeal just plays hell with the dogs ears.

The pig is stressed, She has been with her own and or her dam all of her life. Just make sure she has some other kind of animal for company. I would definately get some pig starter and milk replacer to feed her. we raise pigs and at this age, this is what she needs, She may not want to eat much now, but she will come around. Keep her food fresh, if you hand feed, vs. self feed, that won't be a problem. Make sure she gets all she wants. She will be to be wormed every 5/6 weeks, and be sure to rotate your wormers and make sure she stays warm in the winter. Good luck.

The 'hand underneath' advice is exactly what I needed. I've noticed how nervous she gets about something coming from above, but couldn't quite figure it out. I've learned already that a pig seems to be psychologically quite a bit different than other critters I've been around.

Anyway, she's doing quite a bit better. I discovered a treat she can't resist (yams). She's eating fine and loves the chickens. Has quit charging at things, but still nips (which I'll put a stop to.) She and I are still working on being friends, we haven't quite figured each other out yet but we're on our way to reaching an understanding.

I'm not overly worried about the size issue (except perhaps as it relates to waste and smell). Hopefully she'll stay somewhat smaller eating mostly vegetables and being the runt of the litter. I'm not really worried about the destructiveness issue (although I've admittedly never seen it first hand). Landscaping is not really an issue, and I'm not kidding in the slightest when I said I needed a tiller, I love to garden but its almost impossible where I'm at - High desert, impossible rocky back breaking soil, brutal weeds that grow enourmous when touched with even a drop of water.

Sounds like things are going well for you and the pig! Good for you!
Just something cute you can do with her and it only takes a couple of minutes to teach is to sit. Since yams are a big favorite you can use them. Got down closer to her level and say sit, then put the yam in front of her nose and slowly raise it up and a little back towards her, so the yam is still in her site, but she can't reach it. She will sit and then tell her good girl and give it to her. Pigs learn this and most things a lot faster than dogs do. As long as food is the reward you can get them to do all kinds of cute things. She will figure out fast that the easiest way to get a treat is to sit on her butt...lol

Just an update for those who thoughtfully replied,

My pig was an extremely smart and good pet, she was extremely easy to train (sit,stay,come, turn in a circle) and was in general being quite friendly. She got scared yesterday, ran into her house and had a heart attack and died. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary happened, she must have just had a bad heart I guess.

Anyway, the farmer I bought the pig from has offered me a free piglet from his current batch (currently two weeks old) to replace her. He agreed the symptoms all seemed like a heart attack, but said he had never heard of that happening before. Starting over again...

Oh! I'm so sorry to hear that. And it sounds like she was such a good girl.
If you are going to get another from the farmer try to spend a little time with the litter. Pigs, like anything else, do have different personalities. Between 4-6 weeks old you might want to watch the litter to see which ones are more likely to come over by you for a treat.
