The blue and green eggs are SO very pretty and really have a lot of appeal to people. Right now I'm getting a mix of dark brown, light brown, robin's egg blue, olive green and light blue green--everything EXCEPT white! *L* People's mouth's really drop open when they see those colored eggs... :)

congratulations!!!!! how old are they? I am still waiting for mine (17-18 weeks I think). Glad to hear the good news!

They are 19 weeks old. Seems like four out of the five breeds I have started laying about the same time, however I'm not certain that everyone is doing it yet. In the last 7 days I've gotten 3 dozen eggs. WOW - thats ALOT of eggs! LOL!

mine are 17 weeks old--and--they're soo big. no eggs yet. sounds like i'm late finding nest's tho. want to order the metal ones--but--prices are going up on EVERYTHING!!

Ceresone - you know, if you do some searching on the web I'd bet you could find cheap alternatives to the metal boxes, even though they are nice. I just used 6 plastic milk crates, filled them with straw, put a little retainer wall of bricks around the front of them to keep the straw and eggs in - and the girls use them just fine. Right now they are up against one coop wall on the floor. DH has the materials & is going to build me a shelf for them to get them a couple feet off the ground though.

I use milk crates with straw, too. I just screw them into the side of the coop to keep them off the ground. A bit of newspaper underneath the straw prevents straw from falling out.

I see from another post that you are in my general area. I am near Alexandria. We get some eggs from a neighbor at the present time. May your hens prosper...and all the rest.

I raise large gourds, melons, and many other veggies and fruits.

geez my hens are 6+ months old and a couple just started laying this past week. The aracaunas are not laying yet. Wonder if its the heat? It has been hot this summer but now its cooling down.

My two are 22 weeks old and I still haven't seen an egg out of them yet.

Finally!!!!!!! Got a blue/green egg twice last week. They sure are neat!

Mine are 20 weeks now and STILL waiting! I am so not the patient type.....Come on girls give me some eggs!

What kind of chickens lay the olive green, light blue green, and light brown? I am getting light blue right now, and would love to get more chicks in the spring to get more color.
I do have aracaunas, but all I get is the light blue right now, will it change?

I got my girls this spring, and they are not laying yet either. I did put a light in the house this week, and today I got an egg from one of the old girls.

Hens naturally slow down as the days get shorter--fool them by adding a light. I use a trouble light, hung up where they can't reach it. If they can reach it, they peck at it, and the bulb burns out after a couple days, from the jarring, I guess.

You can put it on a timer, so they get at least 14 hours of light. I just leave mine on--doesn't seem to bother them.

Mine seem to vary between light green and light blue, with the light green being the dominate color laid. When they first started I had gotten some olive green ones, but they have lightened up substantially.

With regards to lighting - I too have a light in the coop. A regular 60 watt bulb in the ceiling. Ever since I started with chickens five years ago, I've always had a light and have never noticed any decrease in cold winter weather. Of course that may also be dependent on the breed as well.
