Overwintering grape vine

Greetings,

I bought a grape vine at an end-of-season bargain price, but neglected to plant it last fall. I'm overwintering in a cool basement stairwell, and checked it this a.m. It's become brittle at the end of the stems (pruned back in fall to about one-and-half feet) and very easy to snap off). The lower parts are more pliable. I'm keeping the soil slightly damp. Any views on whether mine will be viable in the fall? Also, can grapevines grow from bare root stock (are they ever shipped this way?).

Thanks!
