Suggestions for How to Transport Pallets?

While I was driving last night for a leaf pick-up, I found a new house being built and there were about 10 pallets stacked for garbage pick-up or for dumpster pick-up. They are calling me. They are yelling my name loudly.

But how to get them home? It's not that I care about keeping them intact, but I don't want to stand out there in the dark trying to tear them apart before loading them. We're in the city so it's pretty much a hurry-up-load-and-go kind of deal, and you just hope someone doesn't run into you with your hazards blinking.

Anyone have any ideas? One of these days, I would like to buy a used pick-up truck for situations just like these..... My next-door neighbor has a pick-up truck, but I think he would die ever putting anything in the back. Meanwhile, I've got leaves and straw all over the interior of my vehicle from recent pickings, lol.....

If you have a roof rack and a decent rope.. Bungee fasteners are NOT a possibility. Max load is about two pallets, and be ultra-sure they're not going to slip sideways as you round a corner at getaway speed.

The other one, if you have a tow bar on your vehicle, is to borrow a trailer that's wired for night travel (two-wheeled contraption with a tow-bar used for hauling loads of, say, bark mulch. Not huge. About the size of a Japanese car or smaller. Don't know what you call them.) You should be able to haul about half a ton, but do check the tire pressure first! You'll need a hydraulic jack to change a wheel if one is punctured while you have a load on. (Been there...)

And on your way home, be sure to drop some pallets off at my house! LOL!

A hatchback is great for this, but they don't mske them too much any more. My old Escort had a hatchback and she could haul much more than anyone ever guessed. My 2001 Focus has rear seats that fold down, but is not a true hatchback. More's the pity!!

I've never, key word "NEVER", been able to successfully overwinter in my zone 5a, warm climate grown rose bushes purchased in the fall. No mattur what I've done, the fact they've not been able to slowly acclimate to my colder zone has resulted in certain death. I've buried them, provided winter protection, and tried growing them in an unheated greenhouse where similar roses naturally acclimated as winter approaches do survive. Same varieties, purchased from the same Florida source in spring, flourish and do survive after acclimating to my area all summer and fall. If they must be moved now, I advise potting them and having a close friend care for them over winter, then getting them in spring.

I think those scoops will work, but as I stated, you don't want to rip the soil away from the rhizomes or loosen it too much. The video seemed to show the soil mostly falling away from the roots, which would be bad for the bamboo, and like Kudzu stated, you don't want to divide the large rootball into too much smaller individual plants as they more than likely will die. I was thinking that you might be talking about one of these scoops: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDPcQX2nOfk They use these here and I have seen some really large ones that can dig and transport trees with 8 inch trunks. They would be great for large bamboo rootballs and would save some back breaking work. The scoop in the video that you posted would work better in heavy soils such as clay and it would need to be moist, but it would work. I'd like to try it myself here one day. If you do divide the 'scooped-out' big rootball into smaller divisions, again, don't make them too small and try not to disturb too much soil around the rhizomes. Sorry- my finger hit an extra '0'! It is 1000# VW's don't haul that amout, and they are not recommended to haul any weight at all according to my VW dealer- yes I have seen a couple with tiny trailers that must be hauling cotton balls! I should review my original post- I thought I put the info about what I was wanting to haul- maybe not. As sierraeast pointed out there are mountain passes (have to be careful when I drive with the horses with my Dodge Ram 3500 dually even then). And no, I can't use the truck as here in San Antonio the truck is a sitting duck to be stolen(three stolen from my condo complex this month- we don't have garages- though I doubt that would even stop a thief). I don't think the 'round trip' would work- just think- 1. It takes me 3 days each way. That is 6 days of driving, 4 nites in a motel, 4,000 miles of rental miles on the UHaul type rental, and gas for 4,000 miles. With all that-and I am disabled so driving is hard on me- I might as well hire a moving company... Anyway, I am waiting for a reply from UShip, and have called UHaul, (still no trucks available at this time). Still looking....

The problem with transporting water heaters any way but upright is breaking the fill tube that carries water down to the bottom of the tank. Many are plastic and not strong enough to hold their own weight when on their side and subject to vibration from transportation. They are only attached at the top of the tank and hang free.

Vetivert, thanks for the ideas. I was game but, when I went there to try, the pallets had already been hauled off! ::gasp:: They must have taken them away themselves, or had a dumpster change and threw them in, too. Oh well, my back was hurting, I didn't really need to be lifting them anyway.

Of course, that's not to say that I won't try it if I see some more pallets, lol......

You've got to be quick in the city, or someone like me will come by before very long.

I'm always prepared to make a fortuitous pickup and keep several kinds and lengths of clothes line from the dollar store in my car 24/7, along with strapping tape, duct tape and bunjee cords. I also often have a few empty boxes in the back seat. For some large things, I go home and get the old piece of carpet from under the porch to protect the roof of my car, but flattened out big cardboard boxes work almost as well if time or distance are factors.

TIP: Some items need to be tied through your windows as well as to the back and front of the vehicle.

Seriously, though, I think that at a construction site, those pallets were probably owned by the company that delivered some supplies and maybe even had a deposit on them. They were probably just set aside for pick up and not being trashed. I know that's usually the case around here.

just pick some up myself back of a fishing tackle shop by the bins I called in the shop asked the onwner he was clad that i would take them , said save him getting rid told me infuter just help my self , ive notice lots of small buissness with pallets i just ask sometimes yes some times no now ive got a regular supply of pallets for my allottment . trouble is transporting them i had to break them apart to fit in my car , what a pain , i think I might try the roof rack idea
