Pest issues - Trying not to get frustrated

Every morning I wake up to a new plant being attacked by a pest. I know it's part of gardening etc. etc. but I want to make sure I am doing the best I can to keep my plants healthy.
This morning my butternut squash was the victim. Two entire leaves were eaten and while I know it will survive I want to protect it from future attacks.
I was previously using permethrin but then I picked up some sevin. I know that it is not the best choice environmentally speaking so am looking for new ideas.
I know I have earwigs but I'm not sure they would be responsible for eating entire leaves on plants. I took a photo of the affected butternut leaf and noticed that there are little black specks on the remaining leaf parts. I was hoping someone could confirm they are earwig droppings or if they are something else.
I have made some earwig traps with soy and oil and they are full of earwigs...what else can I be doing to help.
TIA!!!
