Something eating plants and brown spots? New Gardener here...

Hi everyone... I have some bug(s) eating holes in my arugula, cauliflower leaves, squash, cucumbers, bush beans... I also have some brown spots on my pole beans... any help appreciated...

Here's what I saw this morning: A inch-worm type little caterpiller thing? My husband squished him before I took the pic so the black stuff is guts lol he was like a little greenish-yellow color -

a tiny little yellow "flying" thing that I couldn't get a pic of he was too tiny looked like a flea but with wings and bright yellow

little tiny red and yellow spots on back of arugula (like a mite?)

Another little fly guy I got a good pic of.

Too few holes which are very small to damage the plants. Keep alert, though.
\ The fly doesn't damage any sort of plants.

Challenging to determine what the small circular spots are . But, again, insufficient to affect leaf function.

"can’t imagine doing without running water for 4 months!" It was . . . interesting. Fortunately, there's both an indoor pool, and a campground nearby that let us use the showers. And a neighbor let us fill jugs at his house. "You use green beans as dried beans? That’s a first! What do they taste like?" Dried beans are basically beans that have been left to get mature. So they just taste like beans to me. They're not as pretty and fun as, say, Vermont Cranberry Beans, and the flavor isn't as specific as most dried bean varieties, and also they're not as big so they don't shell quite as easily. But they're great for a lazy person :) "I guess you cook when you travel. The security check at the airport must be interesting with all that produce in your bag. You don't have a frying pan in there too? [g]" A fry pan -- lol! Well, on road trips I have been known to travel with a salad spinner and Cuisinart :) Always have to have a kitchen. Or someone else's home cooking. Really dislike restaurant food. Self seeded veggies are wonderful. And yes, the ones I mentioned come out good, even if not exactly true to seed, it all tastes good. (though they seem to be true, as well) If you'd have to pay for hay or straw it doesn't seem worth it. Maybe ask a couple neighbors if you can have their grass clippings and/or leaves? (those who don't use herbicides) It sounds like the next few years hold some exciting experimentation for you! You'll have to report back and tell us how it goes. I'd love to hear how you do with fall lettuce and greens if you try them this year.

I just evicted my grasshoppers. It seems that the two original tennants in my garden sent out party invites and a whole bunch more showed up last week. The two were kind of cute and didn't do that much damage, but when their friends started in on the crocosmia and seriously chomped the glads I figured they had to go. I've never had this many before! I wonder if it's because of the hot weather we've been having? I just catch them in a yogurt cup and toss them out the front door - there's a ton of birds nesting in the vines on the place across the street. Grasshoppers make good baby bird food :-) They are kind of big to squish - they make way too big of a splat for me - but if you don't have any birds to feed them too you might have to do something like that. To find them I've just been running my hands through the plants and when I see one jump I go after it. If you don't see any grasshoppers jump after ruffling all your plants, then it's probably something else. It might be something else anyway, since grasshoppers tend to be daytime feeders. I've only had about a dozen of them so far though, an easily hunted quantity - if you've got tons then you might have to resign yourself to spending a lot of time grasshopper hunting or you might have to learn to live with the chomped plants and call this year the year of the grasshoppers :-( BP

Heartland gardener is correct. I have the same insects. You have seen the eggs and larva, but the beetle is yellow with vertical stripes. I sprayed Neem, but have smashed the eggs and keep smashing the insects. These are potato beetles. See insect in upper mid left of picture. I am organic, so I do not use any pesticides. it is the same damage I have on my sunflowers, it is from a brown beetle. they are coming out at night and chewing the leaves. It is the May beetles or June bugs are ÃÂ½ to 5/8 inches long, and reddish brown. the ants are "farming" a type of leaf hopper and aphids. the damage on my sunflowers have been kept low by me going out each night and removing as many of the beetles as I can and I also have a large amount of spiders both ones that I put there and others that moved in own their own to help control the beetles. I don't like to use bug sprays because the birds will be getting the seeds in the spring and because the beetles come out at night, unless you get a spray that stays on the leaf and will kill them as they eat, any direct contact killing spray will be dried and have no effect and a systemic killer will make the plant and the seed toxic which will kill the beetles but the seeds could not be given to the birds or eaten by humans.

The caterpillar is 'possibly' a cabbage looper although can't be sure as the pic is out of focus. Common control is Bt dust or liquid.

The fly, even if it is a leaf miner fly and that is just a guess, does minimal if any damage.

Honestly any and all of the damage in the pics is minor and could be caused by little more than environmental and the weather. If you wish to grow even halfway organically, just ignore it. If you prefer perfect appearing plants then you'll have to bring out the chemical guns.

Yes, just as we don't all need to look like supermodels to have happy and fulfilling lives, our vegetables don't need to look perfect to be healthy and make lots of veggies for us! :) Which isn't to say that you shouldn't be looking as closely as you are. In fact, such close scrutiny will pay off in the long run, as you learn what different insects to watch out for and how feeding damage looks compared to environmental damage. I just had the analogy pop into my head and had to share it.... And over here is my corn, Ruby Queen... So perfect, just like Heidi Klum...

Maybe a few drops of water got on the leaves and it got sunburned? It does't look like insect damage to me. Keep an eye on the bugs under the leaves. Squash them when you see them. Wearing gloves makes it alot easier for me.
